Couples who were courting had to spend time together, right? That was normal. Like, essential to a relationship, according to both modern and classical standards. Sure, chaperones got lost in the shuffle sometime in the 1930s, but that was no reason to feel awkward about spending time with someone one was... particularly attracted to.

Hat. Basket. Bathing suit.

It wasn't like Virginia had not spent time alone with Douglas in the past. They had talked, sparred, studied, and pursued various activities in each other's company. And then... they also danced, in the Librarium. Virginia was never going to see that library the same way.

But today was going to be a different day. It was a date. Cleverly disguised as a picnic on the beach... on a beach, on an island discreetly placed somewhere in the Caribbean, with no eyes, mortal or otherwise, to spy on a proper lady in her bathing suit. Virginia had a blanket spread out in the shade of some trees in the cool sand, and some food and reading material. She hoped Douglas would find the right beach. There seemed to be many of them to go around.

I get knocked down, but I get up again
Lunch on th’beach togevver wiff Gin. It was a simple setup, nae anyfing tae complex - shore wouldn’t do ter stahht anyfing off vat was above any child’ood romance; vat meant nights ahht in th’city were off th’table, an’ clbs, actually most fings wehh probably bahhed from vis relationship ‘least ter stahht. She wan’t much for th’wild ways ov romance, bu’ then he himself was jus’ as fine ter read a good book an’ nae bovver abahht’t ‘imself. He wan’t really a sexual creature e’en if ‘e was an ‘ot blooded male. ‘E jus got th’likin’s for books instead.

A picnic was a good stahhtin place. On th’beach? Why not. ‘E liked some good beachside sunbathin’ an’ th’watehh was refreshin’. He liked ter listen to’t sometimes, jus’ listenin’ tae th’sahhnd ov waves crashin’ on th’shore. It was soothin’....bu’ he wondehhed if Gin would feel soothed ‘t all. Since he wan’t gonna be wearin’ no shihhts on th’beach; thehh was jus’ somefin wrong abahht vat, coverin’ up a man’s chest on a sunny day like vis. He wondehhed if she’d be awrigh’ or nae.

Douglas ‘ad spent th’mornin’ prepahhin’ on th’Moon Clippehh. Some books, ‘is boxehh shorts, an’ a coolehh ov drinks - some alcoholic, bu’ he’d also bin sah good as ter prepahh some nice iced tea an’ some glasses ter drink ahht ov. Wiff everyfin’ ready, ‘e beamed dahhn from th’Clippehh ter wot ‘e fought was th’righ’ island. Wan’t hahhd ter track uvver Guahhdians from th’Clippehh, an’ findin’ Gin in th’middle ov nowhehh wan’t hahhd. Sae he’d managed ter find th’bihhd - nestled in th’shade ov a few trees. A nice spot, vat was.

Fer nahh ‘e was wearin’ a very thin ligh’ blue shihht - one vat ‘e was soon ter lose, ov cahhrse, as he approached Gin, smilin’ as ‘e raised th’coolehh ov drinks. ”Aft’noon, me birdie. Yer lookin’ positively scandalous today.” He winked, grinnin’ as ‘e set his drinks dahhn. ”Bu’ vat’s awrigh’. It’s jus’ us two. An’ we boff know I’m th’biggehh scandal ov us.”

Tropical islands were a great idea in theory, and definitely far away from prying eyes (at least the small ones). On the other hand, they had way more sunshine than a proper English lady would suffer, so Virginia found herself a spot of shade for extra protection as she waited for Douglas to arrive. She just hoped he would be able to find the place.

He was.

>>”Aft’noon, me birdie. Yer lookin’ positively scandalous today.”

Virginia blushed, and instinctively tugged on her swimming bloomers, trying to pull them down over her knees as she sat on the picnic blanket. She knew that Douglas was joking at her expense, but she was still getting used to the idea of... well. Being scandalous.

>>”Bu’ vat’s awrigh’. It’s jus’ us two. An’ we boff know I’m th’biggehh scandal ov us.”

"I will not argue that point" Virginia nodded with a small smile as he joined her, bringing a cooler full of... something. "But I have to admit, I have not spent much time on beaches so far. I tried to prepare for everything. And that includes swimming." she pointed out, smoothing her swimsuit down. "... Not that I made any specific plans." Planning was dangerously close to overthinking, after all. She was trying to not do that.

"What did you bring?"

Aiie, she gave jus’ th’right response - flushin’ face, tuhhnin’ an’ tryn’a tug on ‘er swim gear ter git more modest. Douglas jus’ gave a chuckle, shakin’ his head, bu’ din’t say anyfin’ else; he’d awready ‘ad his fun, nae need ter make’t e’en worse when she was feelin’ th’buhhn sah cleahhly. In th’past ‘e might ov bin a dick abahht’t bu’ he was a lot less ov an arse vese days. Least when talkin’ ter people ‘e genuinely called friends.

She seemed ter take’t awrigh’ too. Bettehh van ‘e fought. Ven again ‘e had deliberately put himself at th’expense ov vat statement at the end, an’ she seemed ter take’t awrigh’. He jus’ grinned in response, quirkin’ a brow. He could tell vat she wan’t much ov a beach bihhd, given th’sahhrt ov time period she came ahht ov. Wan’t really a lady’s fing ter do….an’ she was jus’ a tad on th’traditional side. Ter say th’least.

Bu’ hopefully she’d wahhm up ter a bit ov modehhn traditions. ‘E’d love ter open ‘er eyes ter some ov th’more liberal ways ov th’wohhld. Like nae havin’ ter weahh such ridiculous ahhtfits….bu’, ter her credit, vis one wan’t quite vat bad, a bit less modest van her usual getup, bu’ still on th’ridiculous side by ‘is standahhds. Bu’ ven again he liked ter run arahhnd wiffahht a shihht on if possible…

He set th’coolehh dahhn, liftin’ th’lid ter reveal boff cans ov iced tea an’ cans ov….somefin’ a bit strongehh, wiff glasses an’ ice all in th’bottom ter drink an’ keep’t cold. ”Jus’ somefin’ ter enjoy on a nice day like vis.” ‘e grinned, pickin’ ahht th’glasses for each ov em. Fer nahh ‘e was fine jus’ ter drink tea, ‘e’d get himself a beer latehh. ”An’ a few books, bu’ vat’s nae for now. Cahh for some tea, bihhd? Iced tea.”

Virginia was a little suspicious of the contents of the cooler. Something chilled would be welcome in such hot weather, but knowing Douglas' usual taste she would have to assume it mostly contained alcohol, which, contrary to popular belief, was not effective in mitigating a heat stroke at all.

>>”Jus’ somefin’ ter enjoy on a nice day like vis.”

Virginia peered into the cooler, and was relieved to see non-alcoholic beverages. It was very thoughtful of Douglas, which she noted with a smile.

>>”An’ a few books, bu’ vat’s nae for now. Cahh for some tea, bihhd? Iced tea.”

"That would be lovely, thank you" she nodded, holding her glass. Her outfit was moderately... moderate, but it sure was not very cool. Quite the opposite. "You brought books?" she added curiously. Not that it was a surprise that someone who lived in a library would like to read. "What kind?"

I get knocked down, but I get up again
‘E could see th’way she looked when ‘e said tea - poor Gin ‘ad expected somefin like hahhd liquor...bu’ ven knowin’ him vat wan’t surprisin’. Still ‘e was at least some’at vehhsed in dates. Ye din’t take somefin’ like vat ter a picnic. Sah tea’t was. He reached inter th’coolehh an’ pulled ahht a can ov iced tea, ‘andin it ovehh ter Gin wiff a smile. ”Vis is th’good stuff an’ everyfin’. Yer in for a treat dahhlin’.”

He reached inter th’pocket ov his vest, pullin’ ahht wot looked like a small flip phone. Bu’ when he opened’t, it folded inter somefin’ a bit widehh, like a small tablet. ‘E tapped th’screen an’ watched as it came ter life, holdin’ it ahht for Gin ter look. ”I loaded up a bunch ov my own documents straight from th’Moon Clippehh. Mostly abahht th’Pooka an’ th’Golden Age. Fought I migh’ read back an’ see if thehh ain’t anyfing I can add now vat I been on Eahhth for a while. Cahhrse I also brought th’tale ov Coyote.”

He din’t say anyfing ‘bout vat one, bu’ Coyote ‘ad bin someone important ter him back in th’day, fore fings went souff.

Vis time ‘e turned ter Gin wiff a grin, puttin’t back. ”An’ wot did ye bring for us, Gin?”

@TAMMY okay now he's playing nice.

He offered her iced tea, and Virginia accepted with a smile. It was a hot day, even on the beach, and tea was always a good thing, even more so when offered with ice. Douglas had really thought of everything, and he did not try to goad her into sharing alcohol with him. Yet. Virginia knew enough to know that alcohol led t dehydration, and that would have been irresponsible.

Virginia looked curiously at the device that was not a book... but rather, the container of many books. Sounded like something Douglas was working on, but he was generally also excited about things he worked on. The mention of Coyote only made her more curious. He'd mentioned the trickster before, but her knowledge of the tales was sporadic. They had been deemed to scandalous for most European publications.

>>”An’ wot did ye bring for us, Gin?”

"Oh." she leaned over to pull the basket closer. It was a good old fashioned picnic basket, large enough to hold all necessities. "Well, I brought the blanket. And some... napkins, and plates... utensils... some fruit" she listed, showing a neatly closed plastic container full of grapes, and a net bag of oranges "I have been told coconuts are appropriate, but I know little about them. I brought some pastries, and juice, and some cleaning supplies... sunscreen, although I am not positive it is... needed." she glanced up. She was white as the whitest flour, sure, but she was also a Guardian. Could Guardians get sunburns?... Probably not Douglas. "I also brought some books. I am trying to catch up on... um, contemporary culture."
