once upon a time...

In the dead of night, one had much to fear in the streets of New York City. You'd have thought by now that the denizens of this perilous city would have learned to stay in doors till the sun rose again, or at the very least, carry very scary guns to fend off others with equally scary guns.

Yet, time and time again, these humans were picked off one at a time. Sometimes on accident, a stray motor vehicle veering off the road due to an intoxicated driver. Other times, the culprit had a clear motive. Intent. A vicious aim to end another's life. Still, the humans ventured out into the night's cold embrace. Still, they flocked to their precious second lives where worry and fear ceased to exist!

It was only during these times that Jean could find a proper meal in an alley way as he just had, but the ease of it was sickening. This drug addled man, so hopped up on drugs as he was, barely registered his life slipping away as Jean hungrily sucked and lapped at his neck, taking everything he could hurriedly stomach before more hapless fools ambled this way.

It was so easy, and it shouldn't be this easy! These fucking idiots, so ignorant of their mortality even at death's doors. Tears streamed down the blond's cheeks. The young man beneath him cooed and laughed like a child, his breaths labored, gasping.

Until finally, he stilled.

A muffled sob nearly broke the vampire's hold on his victim, but still did he clamp tight. The more he drank now, the longer he could go before his next meal. Just a little more...

mistake
I thought that I could rule the world

He hadn’t particularly expected to encounter one of his….past mistakes in this place. Not this, of all places, so full of life. Then again he supposed it was a perfect feeding ground; and yet what he had come across was not a sated nor satisfied blood-sucker. Actually….he wasn’t here for Jean Louvier, not in the slightest. He had been investigating the lower world - New York, among other cities, seemed to have an unusual influx of….magic. While there were creatures that lived in “human” cities all the time (why he bothered to call them ‘human’ cities anymore was a little...well it was silly) but there had been more activity than the usual odd disappearance caused by those who thirsted for blood or flesh. Of course he knew where part of it came from - between the Nightmare King’s want for power and the opposing force of the Guardians there was an equal measure of dark beasts roaming densely populated metropolises and those sent to kill or detain them.

For Charles that was just more trouble. He understood the desire for both forces to want to maintain themselves - belief, the acceptance that they existed, was what fed them in some respects; to be forgotten by all was to be erased - a fear, he supposed, that all faced in some regard. But at this rate they were only driving themselves closer to that erasure; when one side pushed the envelope, the other side pushed harder - the crippling of belief on one side enhanced it for the other, and they were….really just playing a pointless game of tug of war with something that inherently belonged to both sides. It was selfish and stupid and he hardly saw any point to this “war” except perhaps to cause him a headache. After all, reviving the dead for one side or another was a hassle for him; the souls of the dead were to remain where they were, not be returned to a corpse. What was dead was meant to lie in peace.

Ah, well. Fools could not be helped for their foolishness. Eventually the war would burn itself out. Or that, at least, was his hope. For now he had taken to a more active role in his observations - monitoring from below the goings-on in the mortal realm, stopping what he could, when he could, and of course recruiting Angels with his miracles as needed.

What irony that he should come across...well. A reminder that his “miracles” were not always so miraculous as they were horrific. In the end, Charles had little control as to how, precisely, his Miracles came into being - his capacity was to guarantee that something would happen, whatever that something was . To come into a great sum of wealth, to escape a terrible fate, even to cheat death. But such a steep miracle could - and often did - come with dire consequences. Cain….had only wished to be free of his fate. And Charles had done something he should not have.

He had taken a liking to the boy.

He had felt his heart squeeze, and had offered the very same conditions as he ever did, had offered his Miracle. And in the end he had created this disaster, this monster. And that monster was before him now, tears upon his cheeks, flowing in silver pearly streams. He had been human, once, and his life had been turned upside down, twisted by what he had become. He probably never thought to believe in such things as vampires. As he had for the boy’s brother, Charles felt for Jean. Perhaps not quite as strongly - Cain had earned...a special place. But Jean...was suffering because of the miracle he had unleashed. Miracles were dangerous things. He was learning that, now, for himself.

He made his approach slow, silent, the tails of his robe lifting lightly in the faint breeze. Jean….probably wouldn’t know. Probably wouldn’t recognize him. He wished to...help, somehow - after all, how could he not, when he had been the cause? - but he would have to be cautious, careful. ”....Boy…” his voice came gently, but loud enough to be heard. ”You are new to this. Aren’t you?”

He knew the answer. But it would be for the best not to….admit that.

once upon a time...

Technically, Jean was a predator who my all right should have animalistic instincts that should help him avoid situations like this. To him, it didn't matter whether he'd been changed for a month or a century. Being a vampire should just make these things work properly automatically. So when a voice suddenly broke against his senses, giving him such a fright that he literally tore away from his victim's neck, all he could do was stare like an animal caught in headlights, so utterly shocked he could have failed to sense this newcomer approach

Bits of the dead man's flesh had torn loose with his previous hasty motions and were now hanging limply from the blond boy's mouth. Blood dribbled down his chin, splashing down to stain his clothing a deep, damning red. Jean's expression was that of pure shock, then panic. Still on his haunches, he started to back away, but in a display of the highest forms of grace, he tripped over the body and landed flat on his butt. It would've been comical if he wasn't terrified of whatever might happen next.

As erratic as his train of thought was, he could still process that this stranger was calm. Unphased. As if he'd seen this dreadful sight before. A hunter, perhaps? "P-Please, don't- it's not what it looks like! He came at me out of nowhere - I had to defend myself!" He sputtered out whatever excuses came to mind as he scooted back, breaths coming in short succession of each other.

Beging though he was, another seed had been planted in his mind. Not leaving any witnesses behind was the key to any crime. And though he hadn't come here prepared to take more than one life, he could think about the consequences of his actions later! It wouldn't take long - this human looked weak, just like the rest of them! Just snap his neck, break his bones, suck him dry till there's nothing left-

An anguished cry bubbled out through the vampire's red stained lips. "Just go, okay? Just forget what you ever saw here and go." Listen, please just listen and go! Go, leave, don't come any closer! I don't want to kill-

-I'm still so hungry!

mistake
I thought that I could rule the world

He looked startled. But then, he had looked to be out of his element from the beginning. And Charles…couldn’t blame him, knowing all that he did, being the cause for his state as he was. But he remained cautious; it was possible that Jean would see him as a meal – in fact, it was more than probable that he did. Jean had no context for who he was – it had been Cain’s doing, Cain’s cursed wish, that had changed him into what he was. He couldn’t know what sort of being Charles was – but all the same he played it safe, watching the boy with icy violet eyes. Most animals when threatened would attack, tooth and claw. Would he?

He did his best not to focus on the…mess that his newborn vampire was making. He’d seen their work before; his was by far a catastrophe by comparison. He looked like a toddler who had barely learned to hold a spoon, food dribbling from his open mouth as his parents tried to coax him to calm so they could clean him up. Only in this case, there were no parents. The boy was by his lonesome. He had no guidance; he had simply been thrust into this lifestyle. The boy…was frightened. Terrified – and unlike the fearful beast in a corner, he backed away, tail between his legs, only to stumble over his own feet and fall.

Were Charles another vampire, a man who sought to compete for prey, he would have removed the boy’s head in an instant, burned the body. He would be dead now. The words that tumbled out of his mouth were pitiful, half-assed, filled with fear. He didn’t….expect Charles to believe that, did he? ….And yet he continued on that path as though to claim innocence where it clearly could not be owed. He had killed for a meal – something that was not wrong, by nature, but most humans would….despise him for regardless.

I don’t want to kill-

He was anguished. In pain. This boy….

This wish is hell.

Charles did not turn. He did not walk away. He didn’t approach, but he refused the boy’s words, instead raising both hands slowly, slowly. ”I’m not going to…hurt you, to report you. Humans wouldn’t take particularly kindly to me as much as they would to you.” A lie, to a degree. Then again there were many who condemned false granters of wishes – those who were “never there” when they were the most needed, those who “could make the world better” but didn’t. They mislabelled him, his role, to create a scapegoat, a face to hate. To many, he was that face. ”But you shouldn’t just feed in the open like this. Do you have anywhere to hide? A place of your own? You should always take care to bring a meal home where you won’t be found. Or upon their own premises. Let them invite you in.”

He wasn’t sure if the other would….listen to him, but he could…hope.
