Tobias walked away from the town glad to finally conclude his unsavory business on behalf of the anti guardians there. It was a necessary evil that sometimes forced his hands to act more brutish than he would have liked. Failure was a much larger fear than comprising good manners, he had too much of that in his life. His failure to do what was necessary and giving into compassion at improper times had made his life harder and lead to some major mistakes in his past. He learned this lesson when he was Duke of his his home province in his race’s kingdom for a time. A few hundred years ago he would be repulsed by such pragmatic thoughts, but experience and loss make seeing such things as necessary tools. He looked over his shoulder at the town, mostly quiet except for the house visit he had to make.

There was a nugget of regret, but he quieted that feeling burying it in the satisfaction of a job well done. It was hard with jobs of this nature when he first started, but now it was being easier. That had to be a good thing. He started down the path quietly sorting his thoughts. He had always loved being on the road and jumping place to place. Staying in the castle was never a life he could bare it didn’t work in his youth nor did it work in his adulthood. He marked that up as one benefit of this job, it always got him moving, seeing new places and people, though humans were too similar to one another these days, unlike back in the past. He smiled as his mind started to drift to happier thoughts only to snap back to reality when he started to smell the scent of someone else. Lucky for them he was full.

Loretta had just finished up with a believer when she began to make her way to the outskirts of the town. It still.... felt strange.

Her and Jack being....somewhat ok again.
Being away from the Anti-Guardians.
Dealing with the aftermath of a major battle.

Even the last couple of nights had been strange too. She had not been getting a lot of sleep... nothing too much out of the ordinary- but she didn't know why each time she woke up she felt a sense of dread and anxiety. Not like she could remember her dreams either...

It'd fade with time, as more time passed since the battle it would fade away. She just had to wait it out.

Maybe, that was why she had decided to come here. A hilltop overlooking the town she had just visited. And a very familiar location to her and one that had special meaning to her. The place she where she and Jack had first met. Settling herself down underneath a tree, she looked out over the town and just took a deep breath.

Everything lately felt.... rushed.... but also...freeing. She was...happy to be away from the Anti-Guardians. Even if it didn't feel real. Her fingers wrapped around the green pendant on her neck as she just... mulled everything over.

In the end she wasn't sure how long she was there before looking at the time. It was getting late....

She probably should get back home, Jack and her had begun to start packing boxes... and he had been at work all day. If she wanted to have errands done and dinner possibly ready by the time he got back- it'd be better for her to head home now. Standing up, and brushing herself off she bent down to get her bag. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a person making their way over, great... she would have to leave to another place if she wanted to travel by snowglobe.

Not the end of the world, but still annoying. She didn't really think much more on it as she began to walk off towards a grove of trees so she could easily travel without raising suspicion.

I have dreamed of joy departed-

Tobias continued down his path, not particularly bother by the other person any other night they would have passed one another without incident, but as he strode closer she started to look familiar. That dark hair and the height had reminded him of someone very vaguely, he wasn’t sure if it was still worth bothering her. Wait, he saw the silhouette of her face, it couldn’t be not here. He started to actually pay attention to the heartstrings, they were all damning a connection to Pitch, Vincens, and troublemakers from the recent Pennsylvanian incident, it was all he needed to confirm her identity. Thankfully he wasn’t a human, they were never able to control their emotions all too well. He stayed the course and continued with a slight increase in his pace.

He wondered how someone could defect from their ideals. His culture was incompatible with the idea of defection and treachery such as this. That wasn’t to say that it never happened, of course it did, but it was so seldom and lead to condemnation for any person that participated in such acts. They were rightly demonized for it. Here he saw Loretta walking, fully aware what that his High King and Pitch would have similar rulings if they encountered the traitor. He pondered a moment how to go about this, he would try to take her to Pitch, that would be the responsible thing to do, he would leave it to him to dole out what ever punishment he saw fit.

Tobias took a breath, he didn’t want her to get away. He jumped a great distance closing the gap between the two and landed in front of her. His violet eyes looked at her, all her connections made the case for treason more and more damning. He hoped to take advantage of his sudden declension to catch her off guard. He ran forward with his vampiric speed in an attempt to grapple her. He took no pleasure if this, but it should be an easy capture.

Out of the corner of her eye, Loretta noticed the person was..... walking the same way she was.... should she try and fade away? Use her illusions? Well....whatever she decided to do, it wasn't really enough. Something...seemed off.... she couldn't place it....but there was a feeling at the pit of her stomach as instinct began to warn her- something was up. Maybe she was overreacting?

In any case...Loretta reached into her bag and took out the snow globe focusing on Santa Fe and Jack's home. But quick movement caught her attention- looking up Loretta took a step backwards as she saw whoever had been behind her a ways away was now in front of her. She felt a knot in her stomach grow when she thought she recognized him.

An Anti-Guardian....however.... his name..... escaped her. But she definitely recognized him.

Green eyes widened as she put two and two together and she moved to toss the snowglobe hoping to make a portal so that she could run or at least get backup, but before her arm could even move- he almost appeared to vanish looking like he was rushing towards her and she felt what was unmistakably him tackle her.

Loretta hit the ground hard and she could've sworn she heard something that sounded like cracking or shattering glass. Immediately, Loretta's hands came up to try and push him away from her- her breaths becoming short with panic. Clenching her teeth she imagined fire.... burning..... she wanted him to feel like the moment his hands touched her he would feel like his skin would be seconds away from melting off.

If she could just get him off her, she could escape...or call for help. But first things first.... she had to get him away from her.

All things considered...perhaps she had been naive. But she had no intention of letting anyone bring her back to Pitch Black.

Tobias wasn't going to let her go. He only knew of this woman's crime and her name, he didn't need to know much more beyond that or what punishment she would have incurred. He wondered why she went AWOL, but that was information that only Pitch needed to know. He was glad his speed and strength were playing into his hand, if she was only a human then there wasn't a chance in world she would be able to overpower him. He heard something break, but nonetheless it was not of his concern, if anything he could tell that played into his hand. The panic, disarray, and fear, were all smells that danced on his palate, laying in the air tantalizingly. Once he subdued her he would feast until she lost consciousness, it would be a reward for a job well done.

It would have to wait, felt a sensation on his hand…It was just a burning sensation it was blistering. He retreated from his position holding his hand in pain. The feeling of disarray now on him as he back away from this woman. His started to breath slowly focus on his iced fire, having it cloak his hand hoping that it could eat some of the excess heat. He looked at her, annoyed at that antic, she wants a far ranged fight, very well. A pale blue flame hit the ground flash freezing the grass. The insects and plants caught in the path of the fire were made still with a cold coat of frost. The fire kept growing forming a circle around the two. He took a breath, he had to act fast to keep this under control. "Want to surrender yet?" He offered her, ready for her to reject the proposition.

Already adrenaline was coursing through her- she felt hyperaware and ready for this fight. She didn't want to fight- but she had no choice in this case. As she cast her first illusion it seemed like it worked which meant whoever this was knew about as much as she intended for most Anti-Guardians to know. As long as he didn't realize it wasn't real- she'd be ok... right?

He quickly withdrew and she wasted no time getting to her feet- albeit unsteadily. He backed away seemingly trying to take a deep breath and all of a sudden she felt the air grow slightly chilly as pale blue flames encircled them. Loretta stared in shock as well as slight awe as the flames seemed to not burn but freeze.

Frost.... ice.... but fire. That was.....interesting. And actually kinda cool- but now wasn't the time to dwell on that. Her opponent took another breath before speaking- asking for her surrender.

Loretta glanced around taking stock of her situation. She could try to see if she could fly out but it was possible he would just heighten the flames making an already difficult jump impossible.... running through these things wasn't an option. She probably should be careful about going overboard with the illusions...but he wasn't in close range at all either...so her weapon would do no good. Actually...

Loretta frowned as she remembered how he seemingly vanished and the force of his hit before.

Hand to hand or any type of close combat would be a bad idea. Still she could possibly get an upper hand. She had to at least try.

"Not really, no." She said with a shrug, "I was having a pretty nice day thank you very much, all I want to do is get back to it." Snapping her fingers she summoned a green flame, but kept it in her hands. It was a warning...but she could make things so, so much worse.

Don't overdo it...

The mental reminder blared once more in the back of her mind. And Loretta knew she had to be careful. She was still recovering from Centralia- and overdoing it on her powers could undermine her believability. Loretta kept her eyes on the Anti-Guardian in front of her.

As long as I can get out of here....it'll be ok...

He looked at the green fire emitting from her hands, well if she can use fire then she can cancel out his fire, but that would lead to an opening for him to get in close. He considered the pros and cons of going in, but decided to play it safe and see if he could leverage his advantage. He had set the field and has the advantage mentally, he could feel it, she wasn't really prepared at all to fight. She spoke her words confirming his assumption. Getting in close would prove to be tricky, but doable if he had enough imagination.

"A shame, I was rather enjoying the weather too, but duty calls." He said, wondering how far he would have to adjust his daily schedule because of her. Initially he was going to do some anti work then spend time in the forest, mostly getting some much needed rest and relaxation, but she wasn't going to let him have it that easily. What a bother. "Have it your way, Ms. Loretta." The words came out of his mouth with regretful malice, she was the one who had to escalate this rather than resolving it peacefully. They always have to make it unnecessarily harder on themselves.

He needed to keep focus or else the flames would start to spread without any restraint, he practiced though, most combat situations proved to be fine. Another wisp of fire blared over the palm of his hand, the coldness from the fire made a fog around it almost emulating smoke.. He tossed the fireball, manipulating it to curve to her right while he made a dash to her left, trying to close in. He hoped he could successfully flank her with this maneuver. If he was lucky he would have a brunette popsicle.

Loretta watched Tobias carefully, he bantered back at her- something to be expected as they both readied themselves for a fight.

Then he summoned a pale blue flame in his hands and lunged towards her left. Loretta instinctively sent her fire towards the left and moved to dodge right only to notice with startling clarity that the fire he sent was curving right where she was headed. She attempted to change her direction and move forwards towards the center of the circle and felt the flame hit her right shoulder. Loretta gasped in pain falling to her knees thankful the fire seemed to vanish as it made contact only “burning” her. But this was different than heat burning- no this was a frostbite type burn. Her skin was numb it was as if she was back in the winter snow for far too long. This was bad… a direct hit from this would be devastating- but there wasn’t much time to analyze. Loretta did the one thing she figured could keep him away from her.

Tobias’s right shoulder begin to sear with pain. As if winter itself was settling in and freezing his body. Even if the cold was an abnormal concept to him- he’d feel the pain she was feeling. And if he wasn’t careful, she’d magnify it.

Loretta tried her best to keep focused on one thing and one thing only, getting out of here and surviving.

Her thoughts went to Jack, should she call him? Could he get here in time? Maybe...if she was lucky- Tobias would back down. But if not perhaps re-enforcements would be called for.

The flanking technique worked like a charm, though he was unable to get a direct hit on her, he did graze her. He knew that would be enough to cause her some pain. While he wasn’t intended on making her freeze severely, it was going to be a natural outcome if she kept resisting the way she was. Though he wasn’t sure what her powers were, he was thinking some kind of pyromancer, if that was the case, they he could out maneuver her. He had faced a few of those fire users before. He dodged the flames, as best he could. He could feel the searing heat of her fireball against his skin. He took a breath, he had to be more careful.

He turned and began to enter the center with his hand ablaze, this would be over quickly. Then there it was the feeling of the bitter cold biting into his epidermis. He was more resilient to the cold, but not immune. He could feel the sting start to radiate on his right shoulder, it was an odd burning sensation, but it felt different. He stopped his advance, losing the fire in his hands.

How did she? He wondered to himself wondering if he wasn’t against a fire using, but some sort of witch. Great… That meant she was just more unpredictable. He would try to calm her down by switching strategies. He looked at her heartstrings and weaved one of his own, altering the already present one. It changed from their current enmity to that of kinship. A familial bond, that would push emotions akin to a brother and sister. “Okay, how about this no more fire, we just talk? We can resolve this peacefully.” He said, wondering if words would be better than going toe to toe. It would at least calm her down from more of her magic attacks, he hoped.

Loretta remained on guard, and was happy when he stopped his advance, her trick worked it seemed and he had fallen for it- but.....then she was overwhelmed with guilt. She saw him clearly realize he was hurt... she had done that. Why did she do that to him?

Why is she even feeling bad about this? He deserved it. But did he really? Logically- yes.... emotionally....no.

Why?

Her brow furrowed as she tried to work out what exactly was going on... but instead she just felt...bad that she had hurt him.

They had just been fighting though- but maybe she had gone too hard on him? But she didn't want to lift the illusion- she couldn't stop remembering what he had said about duty... and she could guess what it was he intended to do. It was probably gonna be something horrible- even though now she felt like he really wouldn't do anything that bad to her.

But logically....he would. Right? But...would he really do that? Shouldn't she trust him? Wait. No. Wait...

Letting out a frustrated sigh as he spoke, all these conflicting emotions and clashing logic... she didn't know where to even begin with any of this and she really didn't have time to analyze. Loretta frowned,

"You could've offered that before you tried attacking me..." She cradled her injured arm, "If you just wanted to take peacefully why didn't we begin with that instead of what just happened?"

She kept her distance from him, and watched him somewhat warily, "...Sorry, if I went too hard though..." she said with a mumble. But she was still not going to lift this... not until she was positive he wasn't going to do something stupid.

She still had half the mind to call Jack, but she wanted to wait to see what would happen. Maybe he had an explanation...

The woven string was attached; he watched her reaction wonder what she will get hit with given their new bond. Remorse, guilt, regret; people were different they felt different things. He should have went for a different bond possibly lover, confidante, or best friend, but sibling was always assured to be the least likely to give him a headache. Speaking of headaches that was the reason he never took on a parental bond with a person, people with daddy issues never made winning them over or peaceful resolutions easy.

"I didn't want you to flee, if I gave you a spook." He said, his mind still trying to work out just what her powers were. Of course, he thought initially he could over power, it was an alternative, though Tobias thought that the prospects of success were much lowers. In addition, he wasn't necessarily assigned to take her in, and he tried to act with a sincere effort. He wondered what that orb was she had broken, was it a way to escape or possible an artifact? He could be making wild extrapolations it was just a memento.

"It happens to the best of us. What were you going hard with any way? Was it a spell? You look as if you have a hipster Salem witch vibe going on." He said with a bit of a brotherly tease. He looked around the area mentally extinguishing any flames he saw. His command over iced fire wasn't complete yet, so any remaining embers had a very real chance of engulfing a forest into a chilly inferno. He knew that from experience. At least it wasn't a lake, water was like gasoline for his fire.

Loretta still was feeling more and more confused. She...felt like they knew each other- but she didn't know him. Or she didn't think she did. She'd know his name otherwise... but...she felt a kinship with him- one she didn't want to betray. As he spoke she sighed her hand tightened around the crystal hanging from her neck,

"You literally came out of nowhere and tackled me. How did you not think that would be startling?" She asked somewhat incredulously. But maybe...he didn't realize but how did he not? This was too much and beginning to get way too confusing for her. She stared at him in confusion as he started talking about 'spells' and 'hipster Salem witch vibes'. Her brow furrowed as she noticed the flames go down and being extinguished. She sighed.

"It's just what I do- ok? Just.... something I came up with is all..." She said not wanting to not provide a reason but still feeling slightly conflicted on how she felt so attached to a man she hadn't really interacted with but every fiber in her being was telling her they were close and she couldn't let him down.

"It isn't like you went easy either..." she pointed out still holding her arm close to her. This burn was strange...and she didn't like it. Hopefully she could figure out what to do and how to heal it.

These were precarious situations, Tobias had to feel the situation out. There was a slight feeling in his, a potential headache perhaps, but he could ignore that for now. He analyzed the look of confusion on her face, it usually happened when he weaved a new bond. It could be used to his advantage, but what was the goal here? She was too ornery to haul back to Pitch, and even with the newly forged bond coming back to the fold of the anti’s was a tough sell. Tobias let out a sigh, what a day. He could perhaps get to know her, it could prove useful later.

“It’s good to see your reflexes are still sharp.” He said casually walking around and kneeling to the broken glass of the globe. Tobias carefully picked up each shard examining them, wondering what they did. Peculiar, but hardly worth a thought at the moment now. “Sorry for breaking your toy.” He said in a teasing brotherly way. After collecting a good amount of the pieces he held his hands out to her, an offer of a peace treaty.

“When I’m playing with that kind of fire, it is hard to take it easy. Ever see it before?” he said in an excited manner. He wouldn’t mind telling her a bit about the fire. It would hopefully lower her guard and put their encounter to rest. He held out his hands, pale blue flames began to dance on his palms. The moisture in the air around his hands began frost. ”I learned it up North.”

He quipped about her reflexes, he was speaking so casually and now walking around picking up something. The globe.... He examined them only to stand and hold out some of the larger shards to her. Loretta frowned, he called it a toy but it had been so much more than that.

"That was a gift..." She clarified her voice a bit short as she took the shards in her hand, still unable to really move her injured arm. She glanced back down at the broken pieces of glass sighing. Gently she set them down on the ground not wanting to risk holding the sharp pieces any longer than she needed to. Looking back at the man, frowning.

Her hand went back to her necklace and she thought of Jack- not wanting to speak his name. While....she felt secure here with the man, the fact was her arm was injured and she'd lost the way to go see him easily- so better to let him know. It didn't take long for the crystal to change colors but she stopped and looked over surprised as he summoned the flame once more- this time under the guise of showing her his magic.

"I...haven't. Fire that freezes....I suppose it makes sense learning it from up north...just never thought you'd be willing to give me such a...hands-on lesson of the damage it causes." She said with a huff, "So what brought you all the way out here on the outskirts? Do you also have business in this town?" She asked tilting her head looking at the man.

Loretta was trying to figure out his name but for the life of her- nothing was coming up....ugh. She felt awful and still confused. She shouldn't know his name- but she felt like she should- and that by not knowing his name she was letting him down in some strange fashion.

Things were actually getting to be back to normal. Or starting to anyway. He and Loretta had a lot to talk about still. They had mostly gotten past the question of their relationship and that they really did want to try again. But then there was also sorting out everything that Loretta having been an Anti-Guardian and now leaving them entailed. Not to mention recovering from their injuries and getting back into their regular routines.

But they had started to move forward and were both recovered enough to be getting out and about again. Which meant Loretta was back to visiting her believers and Jack to his work. He had gotten a job illustrating for a new book and had decided to work on some preliminary sketches sitting out on the side of a hill. It was a nice spot, pretty removed from most people in the area and offering a nice view of the town and landscape. He had been working for awhile when a flash of color caught his eye. The crystal around his neck changing to a familiar green glow. Jack tugged the chain out from under his collar focusing on completing the connection and waiting for Loretta to speak.

When she did though it didn't sound like she was actually talking to Jack. Part of their talks and working things out had included coming up with a signal in case one of them ran into trouble. Reaching out through their crystals without talking in case a sound might worsen the situation. Was that what she was doing? Jack tried to listen to the words carefully, running them over in his mind while still listening for a clue of what was going on.

"I...haven't. Fire that freezes....I suppose it makes sense learning it from up north...just never thought you'd be willing to give me such a...hands-on lesson of the damage it causes. So what brought you all the way out here on the outskirts? Do you also have business in this town?"

Fire that freezes...someone giving a hand's on lesson? It didn't make any sense but Jack didn't really like the sound of it. He hastily started packing his sketchbook into his bag. She mentioned being on the outskirts of town. Jack knew she had been visiting believers but he didn't exactly know where they all lived. And the outskirts didn't narrow things down that much. He remained where he was for now, just listening and feeling a mix of growing confusion and worry.
