Dusk had fully fallen over the forest, the chill of early spring setting in the air all around with just the barest traces of sunlight. Deep in the thicker parts of the forest a long, feline form lounged, almost invisible, among the jutting rocks of a hillside and scattered branches and fallen trees.

Serafina had started the evening wandering around the forest, making her way farther and farther from town and even the popular hiking trails. But once the sunlight grew dim, only touching the forest floor in small patches between bare spots in the branches above she had shifted into the sleek, muscular form of a mountain lion. She ran through the woods, breathing in the scents of early buds and damp, rich earth under her paws. But as darkness completely enveloped she decided to take a rest from the thrill of feeling the wind through her fur, weaving through the trees as the forest around her flew by and had now laid down in a nice comfortable spot, enjoying the quiet that settled over the evening forest, the birds having mostly settled in their nests leaving the crickets and other insects to make their softer music.

After awhile however, Serafina's ear twitched slightly, yellow eyes peering out into the darkness as something different caught her attention. A soft rustle of leaves in the distance, something was scurrying about in the woods. She rose to her feet, tail slowly swishing back and forth as her ears moved to the sound. She jumped down from her rocky platform, furred paws barely making a sound as the touched down on the soft earth. She moved towards the sound, curious what it might be, one of the nocturnal animals that either were looking for a meal or hoping to avoid becoming one in the safety of the darkness. Or perhaps something that didn't belong to the forest at all. She was still to far to see anything but as the sounds grew more distinct Serafina slowed her pace, crouched low and taking careful, measured steps. Soon she would have the source of the sounds in sight.

913 • Dark Elf • Duplicity • Chaux Forest, France

Iollas was not as used to the New World’s forest, they were different from the trees he knew, the weather, and the slight aura of the forest was all different. They held creatures that were not seen by many in his fae lands, or the Chaux forest. That was even more reason for him to continue in securing his title as the “Great Hunter.”

He sat in the tree, as still as a predator waiting for his prey to finally let its guard down. The chase had taken place for hours, but that was all the fun of this. The anticipation, the danger, the game of cat and mouse that his target hardly knew was coming. Today he was slated to hunt the New Jersey Devil, a tragic figure said to frequent the areas of its American namesake and surrounding regions. A child or possessed child born turned into a monstrosity, killing the midwife and leaving ruin in its wake. Another claimed it progeny as a tragedy with a girl cursed for loving the wrong person. Whatever the tale of origin, it was no matter to Iollas. It was a tale told so many times over it was not that impressive to Iollas, but it’s elusiveness was.

It wouldn’t escape from the dark elf, his eye focused on the creature as it roosted from a day of flying in the forest. The demon made a low crunching noise as it snout rummaged in its food acquired. Even docile it was Iollas raised his bow and aimed for his trophy. He pulled the string back and held his breath. This moment was the calm before the storm, Iollas felt his perception of time change elongating the moment. His fingers let the arrow go and it sailed with wicked accuracy puncturing both of the monster’s wings. It let out it’s infamous bloody curdling wail, before trying to fly away. This only exasperated the damage as it failed to take flight, instead crumbling to the ground as Iollas made another shot for the heart. The monsters thrashing about made it sink in it forelegs instead. He hated to make his prey suffer unnecessarily, so he decided to put it out of its misery. He strode close with his bow in hand, a flick of the wrist and it morphed into that of a scythe. He pondered what to make from one of the legendary Jersey Devil, perhaps boots or a cloak. He poised his weapon ready to reap his prize.

As she neared the sounds they became more distinct, soon enough she recognized the shuffling of feet against the ground and crunching and tearing. Something was eating, something fairly large by the sound of it too. She continued onward, she knew better than to interrupt another creature enjoying its meal but she only planned to take a look. She kept close to the trees and ferns and moved in complete silence until she reached the spot.

The catamount stood still, tucked down in the shadow of a large tree, yellow eyes wide and fixed on the strange beast before her. It was not anything of the natural world that much was clear. A huge creature standing on a pair of hooves, huge bat wings, and goat-like head. Serafina only had seconds, however, to take in the creature as it ate its meal before the relatively docile, albeit strange, scene was interrupted. An arrow sailed through the air from the opposite side of the clearing, piercing the beast's wings.

Serafina pressed herself close to the ground, biting back a pained hiss as a horrible scream erupted from the creature chilling her to her core and hurting the Catamount's perceptive ears. It thrashed around and when she opened her eyes once more she saw a second arrow plunged into its leg. And soon enough the hunter himself appeared, a tall man with long pink hair appeared approached his prey as it scrambled and thrashed on the ground, no doubt only worsening the same injuries that already prevented it from making an escape. She watched as the hunter's bow shifted in his hand forming a scythe, making his intentions quite clear. Serafina remained perfectly still unsure what she should do. If the creature was a danger to the people living in the area or the forest itself then it should be disposed of. But what if it was the hunter who was the danger? The creature certainly looked like a monster but looks were not always correct.

Deciding to try and get a better sense of the situation she moved, keeping low and behind the foliage around her. Serafina made her way along the edge of the clearly trying to get a better angle to see the hunter properly. Passing behind a cluster of large fern leaves she could no longer keep the pair in sight for a few moments. And it was just then that the monster let out another blood curdling cry. Whether it was just a last ditch attempt to scare off its attacker or because the hunter had struck a finishing blow Serafina couldn't say. Whatever the reason the cry startled her, causing her to flinch and stumble mid step, a paw landing on a brittle twig that emit a loud snap, all to distinct in the quiet that followed the wail.
