She had stayed too long. Usually when Ninianne checked in on the midwestern United States, or anywhere with the same arid climate she managed by sticking close to settlements. Communities that had sprung up around what few water sources there were or, as time went on, that could bring water to them. She could slip inside cool buildings or take rest in small fountains or find an oasis or small stream not far out from the town to rest. Preserving justice meant working around people and people still needed water and relief from the heat so it all worked out well enough.

But this was different. This time when she had come to the small town deep in the midwestern desert, guided by the pull of a great injustice it was not a simple matter of burglary or corruption in the local legal system or anything else that might have been based in the town itself. No, it was a kidnapping. A local crime syndicate had kidnapped a young boy, the son of an employee for one of the large businesses in town. They intended to hold the child hostage to force the parents to aide in something they had planned for the business. Demanding that they supply information about the security measures and private information within the company. Understandably the parents were too afraid to reach out to the authorities on the matter, believing the criminals might harm their son if they caught wind of police. And unfortunately, Ninianne suspected those fears were well founded.

But of course a group of cruel and greedy adults would have no way of knowing that a figure they imagined to be nothing but fiction might be involved. So Ninianne had done her best to track the organization, gathering clues and noting their movements and determined eventually managed to find where they were keeping the child. An isolated building, many miles away from town and just out of sight from the main highway. By the time Ninianne found the spot she was already feeling the effects of the heat, she had brought with her a container of water knowing that it would be a difficult journey for a water fae but even that could only go so far in such a dry climate.

While the criminals guarding the child were completely oblivious to Ninianne's presence the boy, perhaps only six or seven years old, proved to be a wholehearted believer. So the two of them had worked out a plan for Ninianne to slip the boy out unnoticed in the middle of the night when the single guard was asleep and then guide him to a group of environmental scientists doing research on the nocturnal desert wildlife. She had observed them while searching for the boy and determined that they were good, kind hearted people. So of course they would see him back home safely. There had been just one problem. Scientists were not exactly equipped to deal with ruthless criminals if they caught up with them before they could reach town. And the guard had been known to wake periodically and make sure the captive was still in the back room where they had kept him. So once Ninianne had seen her brave young friend to the scientists she decided to make sure they weren't followed.

The boy gave her his hat and a few other belongings, she bid him goodbye, reminding him of all the details to tell the police once he was safely home with his parents and doubled back. Dropping the belongings in places that would suggest he had ventured off in almost the exact opposite direction he actually was. That would keep the criminals wandering around on a wild goose chase long enough to completely loose the actual trail. But it also meant that Ninianne herself was well away from any trace of civilization by the time the sun was rising. She tried to search out somewhere she could rest as she tried to make her way back to the town and make sure everything had gone according to plan. But as the sun beat down, bare feet trudging through the hot sand grew more and more sluggish. Her breath grew labored as normally perfectly upright posture began to bend under the heat.

Finally Ninianne gave up on trying to reach the town, knowing she would need a rest. She tucked herself down in the shadow of a large rock formation, even with it providing shade from the sun but it did nothing to help the fact that she had long since finished the water she brought and their seemed to be hardly any moisture in the air at all. Slightly glazed blue eyes drifted closed in spite of her best efforts to stay awake, telling herself it was just a few moments rest to catch her breath before she pushed on to the water supply she needed. But exhaustion was definitely holding strong against her.

There was a familiar pull as Nick was jumped from one side of the globe to another. It had been a quiet day so far, spent with him strolling down the streets of one of the quieter London neighborhoods, waiting for the call of Serendipity, or considering on maybe calling on one of his new-found friends of acquaintances. But before he could make any decision, a decision was made for him: One moment, there was a rush of magic, and a split second later, he was standing in the desert. A desert. Definitely not in London anymore.

"Pardon me" Nick muttered, to no one in particular, as he turned around to look at the scenery. The sun was high in the sky, and the heat was already very much uncomfortable for someone dressed in a three piece suit. Nick's cooling systems kicked in as he scanned his surroundings... and finally noticed the small shape in the shadow of a rock formation. "Hello? Miss?"

He walked over, fairly certain that she was the one he was supposed to help. She looked halfway passed out, and definitely dehydrated. "Miss? Are you in need of assistance?"

Ninianne had never really let herself get into this dangerous a situation before. Oh, she had misjudged distances or her own strength from time to time but usually she still made it to an oasis or something where she could rest for a time. But she had gotten too focused on making sure those criminals did not catch up with the others that she got herself rather off the trail.

Given the effects of the heat when she managed to force her eyes open upon hearing a sound nearby she honestly had to wonder if she might be hallucinating already. Standing just a little ways off was what looked like a man even less practically dressed for this sort of environment than she herself probably did. She must have been in very bad condition indeed if she had failed to notice his approach across the wide flat desert. But then he was speaking to her.

Still a little disoriented from the heat it likely took her a bit longer than normal to actually process his words. He was...asking if she needed assistance. Which meant he could see her. And given that he had managed to get this far into the desert without even looking mildly troubled she doubted he was merely an adult believer.

"I..." she said, her voice weak and a little raspy from her dry throat as blue eyes struggled to focus on the man. "Y-yes, please. Do you...have any water to spare?"

It took a few moments for the woman's eyes to focus on him. She looked disoriented. Which was another clue that she was in need of assistance. Nick was feeling the strength of the heat, even though he did not run on liquid water. Whoever she was, if she was a biological creature, she had to feel miserable.

>>"I... Y-yes, please. Do you...have any water to spare?"

"Indeed I do" Nick nodded, opening his bag. As a good helper of Serendipity, he traveled prepared for a lot of things - first aid, mechanical work, navigation... and food and water, even though he did not need any. It was for people who might do. And she did. Pulling out a large bottle, he unscrewed the top, and offered the water to the woman, making sure she could hold it steadily.

"Where did you come from?"

Ninianne felt a little badly taking the man's water, even if he was magical he she assumed he would have some need of it himself. But she was not so foolish as to think she was going to be of any use in her current condition without some hydration. So she reached out for the bottle, her hand a little unsteady but managing to get a proper grip on it.

"Thank you," she said, gratitude clear in her somewhat raspy voice. She lifted the bottle to her parched lips, feeling as the cool water slid down her throat. Ninianne drank down...perhaps a little more than she had intended, her body desperate for the water now that it had a small taste. She did manage to stop with some water still left in the bottle when the man asked his question.

"I had some duties to attend to a...a few miles from here," she replied, voice still tired though the water was helping a little bit. "How...did you get out here?" She added, glazed blue eyes trying to focus on the man properly.

She drank deeply, and the water seemed to work wonders on her. It was really an apt metaphor, water for someone stuck in a desert... Nick was glad that he came prepared, and that he could help her with such an easy gesture. He was not about to leave it at that, though. He'd make sure she was safe and home, or on her way home, before he was satisfied with the results of the rescue mission.

>>"I had some duties to attend to a...a few miles from here. How...did you get out here?"

"I usually appear where I need to be" Nick answered "It is kind of what I do. Serendipity takes me to people who need help. As did you. Now, can I be of assistance to help you get where you need to be?"

The water was a great help, the drink rejuvinating the water fae enough that she could at least focus properly on the man. However she knew a few gulps, even a whole bottle, would not get her back to full strength. She really should get out of here and find somewhere she could just submerge for a few hours... or maybe the rest of the day. The trouble was just getting to water was going to take a significant amount of effort, traveling through the sun and heat of the desert.

Fortunately for her it sounded as if the man was here precisely because someone was in need of help. And Ninianne seemed to be the only other person for quite a few miles. She hoped the boy that she had been out here to help in the first place was safe in town, perhaps even being reunited with his parents by now. But wherever he was it was surely far from here.

"Well then..." she said, pausing as pushing herself up to her feet took more concentration than she expected. Ninianne swayed a little as the movement brought on a moment of dizziness. She reached out to brace herself against the rocks nearby. "I'm grateful for your coming here," she continued once the desert seemed to stop spinning. "Though I'm sorry for the trouble I...I should have paid more attention to the distance."

And it seemed just coming and delivering the water to her was not where his duty of assistance ended as he was offering further aide to get her where she needed to be. "Anywhere with water would do, an oasis or town," she said. "Assuming I haven't gotten too turned around..." she glanced around trying to sort out which direction she had been coming from to begin with. "The nearest town should be that way. I don't want to trouble you any more but...I would be grateful for any help getting out of here. Deserts really are no place for water fae," she added with a small sigh.

After a few moments she realized the man had already helped her quite a bit, having the water for her to drink and somehow just having something other than the heat and dryness to focus on reminded her that she did have to get out of here rather than just letting herself worsen by resting while still exposed to the dry heat. "My name is Ninianne Tamesis, by the way," she said. "Who are you?"

She drank, and seemed to regain some of her strength; at least enough to stand up and start looking for a way out of the situation. Nick held out a hand, politely, for her to take in case she needed the extra support.

>>"Well then... I'm grateful for your coming here. Though I'm sorry for the trouble I...I should have paid more attention to the distance."

"It happens to the best of us" Nick noted "Especially in areas like this. It is easy to get turned around in the desert."

>>"Anywhere with water would do, an oasis or town. Assuming I haven't gotten too turned around... The nearest town should be that way. I don't want to trouble you any more but...I would be grateful for any help getting out of here. Deserts really are no place for water fae,"

"I am here to help" Nick reiterated with a gallant nod, glancing around. If he had his bearings right, he would be able to escort her to the nearest place with... water? She was a water fae? That explained her sorry state in the lack of her natural element. Nick looked at her curiously. She noticed.

>>"My name is Ninianne Tamesis, by the way. Who are you?"

"Nicholas Olivier Time" Nick bowed a little in greeting "I travel around the world, helping people in need of some immediate assistance. Serendipity brought me to you, so I intend to help you to safety before I take my leave."

Ninianne gave a small nod at the mention of it being easy to get turned around in the desert. Admittedly she had actually been careful to be keeping her sense of direction- at least before dehydration set in. But had simply failed to realize just how far she was going in her effort to be thorough. "It certainly is different that traveling through forests or mountains," she agreed. "I wanted to be sure the kidnappers would be thrown off their targets trail but must have misjudged just how far I was going." Hopefully the kidnappers had a better sense of where they were and would have returned to their base before venturing too far. Descpicable as their actions were, leading them to the slow and painful death in the desert had not been her intention. Once the boy was returned home it would be much preferable for them to face charges and be brought to justice by the human system rather than the wilderness. Most likely they were more familiar with the terrain and the risks of desert travel, and probably effected a little less quickly than a water fae, and so would have turned back in time.

She offered an appreciative smile at his assurance that he was here to help. The water was helping her focus a good deal better than she had been but she was going to need more than a bottle's worth to fully recover. Meaning it was still a bit difficult to keep her thoughts on a coherent track.

At his introduction Ninianne made a small curtsy, that wound up being clumsily cut short as she teetered and was forced to accept his offered hand to stay upright. "It's nice to meet you," she replied. "And thank you. It sounds as if you have quite an valuable responsibility." She moved, still slightly leaning on his support, in the direction she thought right though remained ready to change course if Nicholas thought somewhere else a better chance.
