our story started in the depths of the universe, where fairytales were born from starstuff and dark matter -- spirits of light and darkness, humans and monsters, fantastical creatures and godlike entities. after the nightmare king destroyed the galaxial golden age, the haven many of them sought was the planet earth. in a postmodern 2023 world, after centuries of dormancy, the beings of folklore and myth have arisen to take two sides, fighting for stark control over the good and bad in the world while the situation spirals ever more out of hand. mortality and sentience are becoming stagnant, redundant, ever more indistinguishable from belief and imagination; it is up to the immortals to inject their individual concepts back into the world, tap into the hearts of children and adults and each other alike, and finally merge the worlds of mortal and magic into one cohesive whole.

@HALEY HELSTROM

If one more goddamn asshole walked through him, he was gonna flip his shit.

Gabe scowled at the crowded streets around him, and while he purposefully avoided people where he could, they didn’t exactly afford him the same courtesy. He saw the same breaks in the foot traffic that they did, it was just that they couldn’t see him in those breaks, and inevitably wound up moving through him as they struggled to get around the slower people milling around on the streets. He hated that feeling. He hated the hollow emptiness that it brought, and the icy chill it left behind. It didn’t feel right, and all he wanted was for it to stop. He had enough shit to deal with as it was.

He shook his head and started to draw in a deep breath to steady himself, though it was cut short as he felt the person to his left move over into his space to get around something that was in their path. The teen’s breath came out in a snarled exhale as he moved to regain his bubble space, as well as to move far from the heavier foot traffic so he could get a breather from all this.

This desire led him to duck down an alleyway, an action that thankfully wasn’t thwarted by some other jackass getting the same idea as him. The rest of the foot traffic stayed out on the streets, but only when he was absolutely sure that he wasn’t about to get a rude awakening did he allow himself to relax, and sink against one of the alleyway walls. He wound up sitting with his back to wall behind him, and slowly closed his eyes as he tried to regulate his breathing. Calm the fuck down. This was your stupid idea to begin with, so now you just gotta deal with it. He grimaced as he tilted his head back against the wall with a soft thunk. The teen had heard about people regretting their trips to New York City, but this was on a whole other level from what he’d been imagining. All he’d wanted to do was take in the sights, see if it was worth the fuss he’d heard when he was alive, and then to move on. He figured he wouldn’t be in danger, given that no one could see him, and while he had taken this whole bullshit, ‘everyone moves completely through you,’ aspect into account, he hadn’t of been expecting to have to deal with it NEARLY as often as he was now.

He opened his eyes, and looked to his shaking hands. Instantly, his scowl deepened, and he roughly moved his hands down to help push himself back to his feet. Nah, fuck this. He was gonna find the airport, and he was gonna get on the first flight out of here. He didn’t care where it took him, as long as it was anywhere BUT here.
The teen realised too late just how upset he really was, as he felt an all too familiar surge of energy building up within him. His eyes widened, and though he began to utter a curse, it was drowned out completely by the explosion that erupted from his right hand. It was a smaller explosion; loud enough to catch people’s attention, yet small enough that it didn’t cause too much damage to the cement beneath it. Gabe wasn’t as fortunate as the cement, however, as the force from the explosion was enough to lift him out of his seated position, only to unceremoniously slam him back onto the ground once more. He stayed there, lying on his side, for a handful of seconds, dutifully ignoring the smarting pain that the impact had caused, and instead stared blankly, and furiously at the space before him. Oh, for fuck’s sake. Yeah, fuck New York. He didn’t give a shit what else it had to offer, he was done here.

Gabe pushed himself up off the ground, and then back to his feet. He grumpily brushed his shirt off, doing his damndest to ignore some of the chatter about the explosion that was occurring out in the streets. Far as he was concerned, it wasn’t his problem. No one had been hurt, and there hadn’t been any property damage. So, whatever, the fucking assholes could get fucked for all he cared.
...and when it came to getting back to the airport, he was gonna take as many alleyways as he could to get there. He refused to walk out in the streets if he could avoid it.

Haley was not sure how or when she developed her Guardian sense; she just assumed it came with the territory, like all her Valkyrie powers. It was less well defined, though, and often a lot less accurate, which got annoying sometimes, when she tried to pinpoint a kid in need in a crowded place like New York City. Once she got a certain kind of feeling about a certain area, the rest was just good old fashioned walking around, trying to guess by looks which kid needed some intervention from a dead chick.

But sometimes, all she had to do was listen for the explosion.

Haley appeared a moment after the blonde guy hit the ground, shield up and armor ready, just in case there was a fight she needed to jump in. She could not see anyone else except for the one kid, already getting back up on his feet... but that did not mean something was not happening, or about to happen. She was not sure if he could see her, but she was fairly sure that he was the one her gut was warning her about, so it was worth a try.

"Are you okay?"

@HALEY HELSTROM

What.
The.
Fuck.

The plans he’d made to find his way to an airport were forgotten as soon as he laid eyes on the armoured chick that just kinda poofed into existence. He stumbled back a few steps, his entire form tensing as he subconsciously slipped into a defensive stance. If she so much as swung a fucking cosplay sword at him, he was gonna get out of here--

...of course. Of fucking course.

Though he kept to a tense posture, his scowl faded into a resigned sort of grimace, and a hand lifted to pinch the bridge of his nose after the woman spoke to him. If she’d been decked out in anything but a goddamn Final Fantasy outfit, he would’ve assumed she was asking someone else. But, unless there was a ‘con going on nearby, he had to assume that this was one of those weirdos that could see him.
Just his fucking luck that she was a dragoon in training, or whatever the fuck those classes had been. “Yep. Yep, I’m fine.” He closed his eyes with a soft growl, and lowered his hand back to his side. Once he’d taken a moment to compose himself, he opened his eyes again, and frowned at the woman. What the hell was with her getup, anyway? He couldn’t imagine a reason to be wearing that kinda shit unless they were looking for trouble...and if she tried to start something with him…

His hands twitched before he curled them into tight fists. If she tried that, he’d send her fucking flying, armour or no armour.

There had been an explosion, but no confrontation. At least none that Haley could see on arrival. Just a kid, who looked defensive instantly (which was a normal reaction to a Valkyrie appearing out of thing air), but not scared or disoriented. Haley lowered her weapons.

>>“Yep. Yep, I’m fine.”

He did not look... fine, but also did not look dangerous. What he did look, to Haley anyway, was exactly the kid she had been looking for. Older than most kids she helped as a Guardian, but he could definitely see her. Interesting. Relaxing her shoulders, Haley dismissed the weaponry and the helmet, until only her usual Norse outfit remained.

"I heard the explosion" she explained "I thought I'd see if someone needed some help."

Okay, so disappearing weapons and armour were a thing, now. Sure. Why the fuck not. Least it meant that Chuckles here wasn’t about to attack him. Or, at least that’s what he was assuming it meant. He would just have to keep an eye out for any sort of bullshit in the meantime.

He lifted his eyebrows at her explanation, the corners of his lips curling into a slight grimace. Since when did dragoons charge towards explosions? She really was taking this whole Final Fantasy shit to the next level, wasn’t she? Something about finding a new side questline by way of following the sounds of danger?
Sucked to be her, but this was exactly where her quest ended. And unless she wanted him to nab her a granola bar or something, he had nothing in the way of a quest reward to give to her. “Nah, no one was hurt. Everything’s good.” Sure, a few people were rattled and probably gonna be spouting out shit about terrorist attacks, but...wasn’t like there was any truth to that. They’d learn to settle down after a while, and he’d do what he could to prevent that sorta shit from happening again.
He just needed to get out of this stupid, crowded city first.

>> “Nah, no one was hurt. Everything’s good.”

No one was hurt. Definitely no one died. But then... why was she here? Haley was becoming less certain by the minute that her gut feeling had been right this time. And yet, there had been an explosion for some reason, even if no one had been hurt, and she still felt like she was here for a reason. A Guardian reason, not a Valkyrie reason.
Gods, it was so much easier when Odin just gave you an order...

"So... what exploded, then?..."

@HALEY HELSTROM

Great, the dragoon had glitched out.

Gabe snorted as the lady kept on standing there, looking more than a little hesitant and uncertain. What, were explosions usually what triggered certain mission flags in her AI? And now not only was she unable to meet the quest requirements, but she was unable to reset the value? Sucked to be her, but he still refused to become a stupid quest giving NPC to her grand quest.

Her question caused his snide thoughts to come to a halt, and he visibly stiffened. His breathing became a bit more carefully regulated, and he gave her a guarded look. Fuck, she really was determined to see this through, wasn’t she? “Doesn’t matter. It’s not gonna happen again.” At least not right here it wasn’t. So unless she planned on following him around for the rest of his days, she wouldn’t have to worry about it.
she’d better fucking not.

What was not gonna happen again? Invisible things blowing up? Haley folded her arms. Geez, teenagers were cagey. Not like she used to b... well, okay, scratch that, she had been fighting in actual cages back in those days, but geez. Did she really have to be the one in cosplay and the adult around here?

"Look, dude, I'm here to help. Let's say... let's say I'm the local superhero and someone just threw the bat signal up. Or blew it up, really. I'm not here to fight you. Just wanted to check if everything's okay."

@HALEY HELSTROM

The teen scowled as the dragoon continued to press for details. Fuck’s sake, she wasn’t gonna let it go, was she? He’d already said that everything was fine! Why was it so hard for her to just take his word for it, and fuck off?
She was really damn determined to get that one hundred percent completion on side quests. Or...to be a nosey superhero. Hmph, at least she’d got one thing right; she probably suited Batman the most, with how stubborn and inquisitive she was being. At least she wasn’t going the route of punching him to get answers, but...that could change. Especially because he sure as fuck wasn’t gonna play along.

“Good for you. But everything’s fine, so you don’t gotta stick around. Go find someone else to annoy.” There. Hopefully THAT would get through even her thick skull that she wasn’t wanted or needed here.
...but he very much doubted it would. At least they both knew where they stood now.

This kid was not going to make things easy. That was fine. Haley had been around stubborn teens, had been a stubborn teen herself, hell, half of Valhalla was stubborn teens (little known fact, but hey, Vikings were adults at the ripe age of 13). She folded her arms with a sigh.

"You're really gonna make me do the extra rounds here, dude? I've seen dead warriors less stubborn than you are, and I was dragging their asses to Valhalla. I'm here to help you, so how about we cut the mandatory sulking and talk about what's going on?"

@HALEY HELSTROM

What.

The teen stiffened at her comment, and returned to his defensive stance as he narrowed his eyes to slits at the dragoon. Dragging their asses to Valhalla? Nah, fuck that, if she thought that she was dragging him anywhere, much less to that fucking afterlife, she had another thing coming. He met her folded arms and sigh with a scowl, and curled fists. It’d make him a liar, but he wouldn’t hesitate to purposefully create another explosion to keep this bitch at bay. Stupid dragoon would’ve brought it on herself at this point, what with how damn nosey she was being.
Come to help him his ass. He never asked for her help.

“And I’ve been telling you to fuck off. I don’t know who the hell you think you are, but you sure as fuck aren’t anyone I gotta listen to. I don’t owe you shit. Jesus Christ, how did he keep running into these assholes? And why was it that none of them took no for an answer? “Get the hell away from me. I don’t want anything to do with you.”
