Ghouls
It was getting late and the two teenagers were expected home soon. After much debate they had agreed to take the short cut through the cemetery. Both were frightened though the boy hid it better than the girl. Hid it from the eye, but fearlings had other senses. Three of them followed the teens, drawn by the tightly bound fear of the boy just leaking out in tantalizing samples while the girl's flowed freely in jumpy nervousness.

They lurked in the dark corners, twisting the shadows of the gravestones and tree branches into monstrous figures and grasping hands. They followed the children, feasting on their little spikes of fear the way their hearts thudded and their hands trembled with every rustle in the dry leaves and ever shift of shadow. And then they came to the center of the cemetery among large intricately carved graves, stone urns and angels looming in the darkness.

"Look," the boy spoke, masking his anxiety in bravado as he pointed to rusted metal bars the rose up out of the ground a foot or so and then bent over, standing like cages over the graves, mortsafes. "They built those in case the person was a vampire or zombie and tried to come back."

"Don't be stupid," the girl replied, swatting at his arm. "It's to keep out grave robbers." But she still kept her distance from the structures.

But keeping in or keeping out, bars held no power over shadow. And one of the fearlings slipped inside, rustling the twigs and grasses.

"Something's moving in that one," The boy gasped as he passed near it. He jumped back to where a second fearling waited in the shadow of an oak and reached out, clawed fingers latching onto his jacket. "It's got me!" He called out.

The girl grabbed his hand, trying to pull him free. But the third fearling crept up beside her relishing the scream that tore from both their throats as it rose up into view, a wicked sharp toothed smile and dark claw like fingers bared.

Autumn was a particularly terrible season in Snow White's eyes. The weather was often unpredictable, shifting from cold to warm depending upon where one was. Worse, it was a time where people move from celebrating fear to thanks. It was the former than tended to work upon her nerves. While there was no harm in people's actions, the actions they had fed upon beings of fear. As someone who could actually see the shift in people's hearts it tended to give her terrible headaches.

Today was no exception.

She had begun to keep to Europe recently- it was more of an avoidance of where she wished to be, though she would never admit it- and Scotland had been where she had come to recently. A weariness had come upon her between her plans to seek out the Sandman, Phobos, Guardian work, and so much more. There seemed to be little time to pause and think that night as she scoured the land, purifying and protecting.

It seemed almost ironic that she found herself in a cemetery that night. She had expected some trouble tonight and humans these days...well, they were a bit more stupid than the ones during her time. A place where danger likely lurked would no doubt be a good place to find people in trouble. It always was.

Almost immediately she sensed a sickening feeling. It was terribly dark and consuming, the feeling of a dark heart. Worse still, there was more than one. The feeling claws at her throat, making her feel ill, and she knew she was quite close. The sound of frightened children merely confirmed what she had thought. Quickly, she followed the sound but not without letting some purification magic stretch out. It was hesitant, not reaching out nearly as far as it could have.

Still, best to not waste all her magic at once.

To the girl's credit, even as the dark creature rose from the ground she continued to grasp her companion's arm trying to pull him free of the other fearling's grip. But that just meant the ravenous beasts could enjoy the wellspring of fear in one place. They relished the two teenager's screams of terror as the flailed desperately in the darkness to get the boy free of the tree fearling's hold. The third slipped through the shadows of the mortsafe bars, eager to taste of their fear along with its kin it drew closer to them.

But in their eagerness to drink in the fear the creatures failed to notice the approach of another. By the time they were aware of the winged woman's presence it was too late. The puryfying aura had ensnared them. The wicked grins they wore contorted into looks of agony as all three convulsed in the energy that was so at odds with their natures.

The one in the tree lost its grip of the boys coat. Not expecting the sudden lack of resistance to their desperate attempts to escape the two were sent reeling and collapsed onto the ground. They looked up in time to see the figure of a person in the moonlight. Or well...a person with wings!

"What's going on?" The boy shouted as he and his friend tried to scramble to their feet amid the scattered leaves and slick grass.

Snow's magic worked far better than she had expected. While it had been weak, the fear longs had clearly not noticed her presence. As a result, all three had been caught up in its aura, naturally caught in pain due to their corrupted nature. It was, as far as she was concerned, a rather rare moment. Most of the beings under Pitch had enough sense to scatter from her magic. After all, it could be quite troublesome when she pulled out all stops. She doubted a Nightmare would want to see what would happen when she hit them full blast.

Still, she was wasting time. Her gaze drifted to the clearly confused and frightened children. A morose expression took over her face before she grasped her spear. The object gave a clear sign to any unknowing being what she might be, as it looked remarkably like a cross. It was a rather fitting object to be in the hands of a woman who held a high resemblance to the image of an angel.

Moving to place herself between the children and the fearling, she cast the two a single glance. "I advise you get out of here," was all she said before making to swipe at one of the fearlings. Hopefully, the two chose to listen to her.

Slowly the fearlings managed to gather themselves, to push past the pain that the purifying aura caused them. The children's continued fear helping to give them just enough strength. They had allowed themselves to be distracted, drunk on the wellspring of fear from the two mortals, and let their guard now. But they would not make the mistake again, no now there was an enemy and one that could hurt them, could destroy them.

The children watched as the woman...no, the angel...moved between them offering her instruction. That they should leave. Well, they certainly needed no convincing on that point. They rose and moved to scramble, running as fast as they could to escape the cemetery. The fearlings snarled in frustration as their victims fled with the Guardian positioning herself between them and their prey.

The three advanced on her only for the cross-like spear to be thrust forward. It caught one fearling square in the chest. It embedded deep into the shadowy form causing the creature to shudder and release an agonized wail before it dissolved into nothing. Although the other two bristled at the loss of their comrade they had no intention of wasting the opening.

While her attention was on attacking the first of their number the second also disappeared. It sank deep into the shadows that pervaded the dark graveyard and slid invisibly through the ground, following the trail of fears that the running children left in their wake. They had only made it a short distance away before it overtook them, rising out of the inky shadow of a tombstone in front of them. A large shape blocking their path and causing them to stumble back, clinging to one another.

Meanwhile the remaining fearling raised it's clawed hand swiping out at the angel, aiming to snatch at her and tear at her. Perhaps pain would make her fear them too or at the very least get some revenge for the one she had destroyed.

You do not take on an enemy you cannot beat. Ares had pound such words into Snow when he had taken her in as a student, especially when he had realized exactly how rash she was. She was a bird who would fly into the sun if it meant saving another from harm. Such recklessness had disturbed and angered the God of War. He had not needed the wisdom of Athena to realize that she was no soldier and did not act as one in a fight. As a result, he had made it his duty to make her realize that jumping into danger was something that she could not do if she ever wished to learn to fight. While it had taken time, she had eventually understood. She had not adopted his beliefs as coldly or cruelly, but...she understood and that had been enough for him. After all, she was quite sure that even he had recognized that the pupil he had taken in under boredom was more healer than warrior and he could not change that.

It did not mean that he could not make her prepared for the battles she expected though and such a mindset showed. Snow was not a fighter as her few friends were, but she could fight and there was an observant nature to her that settled in the longer she was within danger, like a second nature.

It was a quick move, her staff blocking the attack the fearling brought forth. Yet, she kept her stance open to everything. It was not the stance of a warrior. They would have focused solely upon the fearling, seeking to destroy. A healer had to pay attention to the whole field and care for those upon it.

She was focused, eyes sharp and observant. You have two opponents. Where is the other? The quick thought did not require much meditation. There was likely to be only one place that a fearling would turn to if not her: the children. Eyes shifted to the children- scared and helpless, cowering from the dark. Gathering pure energy within her hands, she cast it towards the fearling.

The shadowy hand was met by the angel's weapon, stopping the claws from striking her. The fearling snarled in frustration. But it was quick to react, clawed fingers that had been poised to scratch and tear instead clenched closed around the staff in hopes of preventing her from using it.

However, it was not her closest opponent that the angel's next attack was intended for. Even with the attacks she remained aware of the children and did not miss the second fearling looming over the pair as the trembled and clung to one another. It was just about to send out twisting strands of darkness to entrap the children keeping them present and the fear flowing until it and its companion could deal with the interfering Guardians when a blast of pure energy soared through the air and caught the second fearling. It's own agonized screech joined the startled shrieks of the children as the energy burned through its corrupted form. The creature so deeply corrupted and seeped in fear and darkness had no chance against the angelic power and it's form quickly dissipated into nothingness.

Still clutching at her staff in hopes of holding hindering her movement or attack it gathered up the darkness all around them to send a pointed bolt at her head with an enraged snarl. With the fearling gone the teens recovered themselves, looking back once more at their rescuer as she grappled with the last creature. They watched, torn between every instinct screaming at them to run, to get away and wondering if they really should separate from her. Should they make sure she got out alright? Was it safe for them to venture away- what if there were more of those things?

What was courage without fear? Virtues often fell flat without the experience of the terror of vice, as light and darkness were merely two sides of the same coin. They could not exist without the other. A light without darkness became blinding and a darkness without light became consuming. The children feared and doubted, hesitating to follow the words that the former Archangel gave them. However, she did not discourage this. Her duty might be more difficult with them present but how could a child learn what reality was like if they always turned away from it?

Perhaps it was a foolish thought for her to think that they should realize that there was not only danger, but that it was not an invincible danger. After all, many other Guardians would have told children to flee and discouraged their behavior. Yet, she cared little. She knew she was different, but it was a difference she embraced.

After all, how could one claim to be a Guardian of Puroty if they had not known corruption first?

The fearling reacted on anger, snarling and hissing. In a fluid movement, she avoided the bolt aimed for her head, shadow destroying stone behind her instead. Her eyes narrowed and she responded by surging energy through her staff, extending it beyond her- to purify, protect, and burn.

The fearling's attempt to hinder the Guardian's attacks ultimately backfired on the creature. With its claws locked on the staff it had no time to retreat from the sudden surge of purifying energy that flowed through the handle. The fearling screamed, reeling back from the weapon but it was too late. The pure energy had already found it, the burning feeling quickly spreading from its hands and through its entire form.

It fell writhing to the ground, the purified energy coursing through it's shadowy body until it disappeared the agonized cries falling silent. The teenagers watched, wide eyed as the last of the terrible monsters vanished a heavy silence falling over the cemetery once again. They looked up from where the creature had been to their savior.

"A-are they really gone?" The girl asked timidly as the boy's gaze flicked around at the nearby shadows as if also trying to confirm that there was nothing else lurking around.

The scene before Snow was horrifying, far more than either child could realize. With vision most abnormal, she could only watch as the creature went from an unsightly taunt of pure darkness to...nothing. There was no light, no darkness, and no grey to where the being had once been. It was as if it had not existed at all. She might have found it more chilling had the creature not been one that was preying upon a childrenand not merely in a manner that kept the balance at its best.

Her glance shifted to the children as the girl spoke up. No. The truth was that there were probably many more where those three had come from and that Pitch Black lurked in each shadow, watching and waiting. The word was not fixed just because she rid the universe of three fearlings.

Yet, even Snow White was not so socially inept to think that it was a good idea to tell already frightened children such things. Children became terrible things when you fed their fear and anger. The truth could be as harmful as it could be healthy. A parent withheld things from the young because sometimes...sometimes reality was too cruel to know about when you had not come to gain a bit of understanding.

So, the angel offered a simpler truth. Lips curving into a quiet smile, she answered. "Yes, like they were never here to begin with." And it was a truth because those three were gone, destroyed by a light too pure and blinding for them to survive. "Though," she said, arching an eyebrow, "You might want to avoid cemeteries."

Even in the faint starlight the children could see the gentle smile that graced the angels' lips at their answer. Already finding comfort in it, their trembling abating and then both released a breath of relief at her answer. Those...demons? monsters? whatever they were- they were gone now. She then offered a warning and the pair certainly did not need to be told twice. "We won't." "Right, yeah." They agreed, nodding vigorously.

For a moment the pair fell silent as the full scope of the situation settled upon them. They'd just been attacked by monsters. And...an angel- a beautiful winged woman with a cross shaped spear, what else could she be but an angel? An angel had saved them.

"Um..I...I gu-guess we should...go. But, uh, thanks for..." The boy trailed off gesturing at where the creatures had been, his voice likely betraying his shock.

"Yes. Thank you," the girl added, bowing her head, though her eyes remained wide with awe and leftover adrenaline. "Thank you, very much."

Slowly they began to move, backing up with their gazes lingering on the angel a few moments more before they turned and hurried toward the nearest exit of the cemetery.

For the most part, it appeared as though she had made no mistake. The children had not become further frightened or intimidated, something which was a small victory in the eyes of one as socially challenged as Snow. More importantly, they appeared to be inclined to listening than causing trouble. It was something she was greatful for. She never did well with troublesome children, being as short-tempered as she was.

She tilted her head at their words, not particularly expecting the thanks. Nonetheless, she supposed that it was probably better to accept such a gesture than explain. The truth was probably as frightening as it was dangerous for a mortal child. "You are welcome," she said simply.

She did not immediately leave as they listened, lingering even after they had finally left. It was only after a solid minute that she stretched her wings and took to the sky.
