The past few months had been hectic to say the least. After weeks of being unable to walk Ninianne had been of only limited use when it came to purifying and healing Avalon and the fae that had been effected by both battles and the corruption. Fortunately the returning fae had been able to do more and Viviane and Desiree especially had done immeasurable work towards completely restoring Avalon. And just as the island had begun to return to normal, mostly, and Ninianne finally well enough to make a few short trips off of the enchanted shores the Nightmare King had found another deplorable way to strike.

Ninianne still could barely imagine what sort of pain Dainn had been put through to be transformed as he was and as if using such cruelty on anyone was not bad enough but to see her friend suffer so had been especially hard. Fortunately Dainn had other friends in Caerwyn and Leora and the three of them had done all they could to try and help restore the Shuck to health...and his normal forms. And so Ninianne had found herself still returning to Avalon quite frequently, both to make sure the Anti-Guardians were not going to try any more underhanded tricks and in hopes of finding some fae that might have ideas about what might be done to help Dainn.

Which was what brought her to wandering the beaches of Avalon today. She had not really been concentrating much on any particular destination, simply intending to make sure that everything was indeed regrowing smoothly and checking in with the fae that she crossed paths with. Though, given how caught up she was in thoughts about ailing friends it likely should not have been a surprise that her wandering brought her to one of the new additions to the island. She paused noticing up ahead the glint of silvery color shimmering in the sun. The tree that had sprouted from Adrian's stone had been all Ninianne hoped for and more. A testament to what they had all fought and sacrificed for. At the time she had requested it of the smith she had thought two of their number to be dead. She had been relieved to learn from Caerwyn that Caspian was alive, though she still worried for the celestial prince after Caerwyn had given her some idea of the injuries he sustained and the length of time he had been tortured as a prisoner of the Nightmare King. Caspian's friends, the other surviving celestials had been understandable protective of him and from what she understood he had indeed been in a very risky state. So despite how much she wished to see that he was alive with her own eyes and offer as much help as she could, it did make more sense not to overwhelm him with too many visitors. Instead she had offered a supply of Avalon's waters in case those tending to Caspian thought it might be helpful and decided to wait for a time before seeing him herself.

As she approached the tree Ninianne could not help wondering how Caspian was doing. She hoped his healing was progressing and that he would be well soon. Still, she knew after what he had gone through it would take time not just to recover physically but also mentally. That battle had been chaos and she had no doubt that the Nightmare King would have used the worst sorts of torture on Caspian. Coming to a stop nearby the tree Ninianne slowly reached out a hand, sliding down the smooth white bark and breathing in the sweet perfume of the pale blue flowers above.

Recovery had been slow. And yet there was one suggestion that had rung in the back of the Cancri’s mind. Ever since that talk…ever since the visit from Byakko- the Celestial White Tiger…

At the time, he wasn’t exactly too sure what the immortal was trying to say. He hadn’t been sure if it had been real at all really- but as he mulled the words over in his mind he felt like a path to the future materialized.

The first step would be to go back to the beginning. To go back and be where it had all started- which was Avalon. Caspian...felt weird even considering going back- but he also knew it was right. And it would be that first step he needed to start to move on. And while he was still unsure if that was even possible- he wanted to try.

Because trying would be better than doing nothing. Trying would be easier than continuing to live the rest of his life- however long it might be- like this. In this strange and weird world where everything was too much and not enough at the same time. No.

If he wanted any sense of normalcy then he would do as the Byakko encouraged and start re-building his life. He had even already spoken to Alhena... and he would continue this. And he would progress. It would be ok.

Somehow, it was easy to find it once again. And Caspian wasn't even sure how.... but here he was... on the shores of the magical island. The place when he was there last- was under attack.

The place where Marcus had died...

The scars of the battle still lingered on Avalon. Caspian scanned his surroundings, taking notes of new growth and healing that was certainly happening. It also felt....livelier? As if....more life had been given back to it despite what had happened.

The sun was still bright here...and Caspian was beginning to wonder if it would've been better to come in the night. Luckily, the sun was high but would begin it's descent soon. Before long, nighttime would come and he would be able to relax more- until then he would stick to the shade.

As he meandered through the trees, something caught his eye. Silver leaves... that was... unnatural. And curiosity led Caspian closer to the spot they had been when Marcus fell, when he fell in battle against Pitch. And the sight that greeted him was something that took his breath away.

Caspian had to lean against a nearby tree as he took in everything in front of him. A tree.... growing tall and strong... was at the spot. It had white bark...silver leaves, and there was a calming scent that filled the air. It didn't take his eyes very long to find the source- beautiful blue flowers nestled between the glinting leaves.

It was breathtaking...

And beneath the tree's branches was a familiar face- Ninianne.

She was ok...

That...warmed his heart. It made him feel 1000 times better. A rare smile emerged on his features as he continued to take in the sight. The magical tree with it's leaves and branches swaying in the gentle breeze as water lapped the shores of Avalon.

For the first time in a long time... he felt peace.

It would take some time to get used to the amount of activity that had returned to Avalon. In fighting to take back the island, it seemed as if Ninianne had earned an even deeper bond with it. So, just as she had before its corruption, she generally had a sense of when others arrived on the island whilst she was there but it seemed that ever since the corruption was banished more and more fae were returning to the island. So Ninianne was sensing magical presences all over, some weaving seamlessly with the forest, others more akin to the water like Ninianne herself was, while others simply walked with a powerful sense of magic about them. Sometimes they seemed familiar...perhaps fae that had been here in ages past when Ninianne was the newcomer to Avalon.

The Lady of the Lake knew she would have to get used to the activity and learn how to sort through it a little more. But for now, anything that came as a threat did still stand out to her- as Pitch's presence had that night he attacked Dainn- and she also trusted the increasingly active fae to also keep an eye on any potential trouble. Which meant, lost in thought as she was, Ninianne was completely unaware of why one particular distant presence felt so familiar until something caught the corner of her eye. She turned her attention away from the tree to see a figure standing a little ways in the forest.

"Caspian," she gasped, staring wide eyed at the Celestial hardly believing that he was actually here of all places. He still bore the scars of his ordeal- the burn around his eye no longer fresh and blistering as it had been on that awful night but still there, healed as a scar. But he was standing, she even thought she could see a small smile at his lips. And seeing that he was at least mostly healed flooded Ninianne with relief. She took a few steps forward, her long trailing skirt rustling over the grass and ferns, as she moved to stand a comfortable distance from him.

"I didn't...how," she stammered, her voice faltering a little as she realized she really did not know what to say. Seeing Caspian alive and healed was indeed wonderful but her mind swirled with questions as well. How healed he truly was and what had brought him to Avalon now. But she kept those to herself not wanting to bombard him with questions, instead choosing to wait and see what he had to say. "I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting...I didn't realize you were here." She bowed her head, both in a gesture of respect and trying to compose herself. After everything Caspian had suffered, and all for having come to help defend Avalon, the least she could give him was a proper welcome. "I-it is good to see you." She added, looking at him once again, the emotion shining in her bright blue eyes revealing just how much it meant to her.

He hadn’t been expecting for Ninianne to turn around, but in a way he was glad when she did. Caspian gave the Lady of the Lake a small smile. Her eyes were wide and he felt a bit embarrassed, as he knew that her gaze was no doubt taking in the injuries he had sustained. He was still getting used to it, the looks he’d get especially over the scarring over his eye. She took a couple steps over and stopped a comfortable distance from him.

She was always so considerate.

He waited as she stammered out some words, unsure when he should begin supplying the answers to the myriad questions that were no doubt filling her mind. Finally, Ninianne seemed to find a thread to follow. He shook his head and exhaled,

“No, I did not give any warning to you. It is natural you didn’t expect me. I apologize for coming without warning…” He trailed off, only to smile at the way her blue eyes shone.

For a long time, Caspian had been wondering if everything he had gone through had a purpose or if it had been useless… a waste of time… and yet… when he looked into Ninianne’s eyes- he knew. It made a difference to her. And… that actually comforted him a lot.

“It’s good to see you too.” He said before pushing himself up, taking a step towards Ninianne. “You seem well, and Avalon seems… it seems like things are going well here. There’s a… feeling in the air that wasn’t here when I visited last.”

He didn't want to alarm or overwhelm her, but he also had questions. But he was glad that things were better here. But he wasn’t sure what else to say, what could he say? All he knew was that he was already happy that he had taken the Byakko’s advice and come to the island. Still… he probably should address the biggest thing, clearing his throat, Caspian took a breath before saying,

“I am sure you have a lot of questions…”

A small smile tugged at Ninianne's lips at Caspian's reassurances, his understanding helping to set her to recover herself from the shock. Unexpected as his arrival was, the Guardian was pleased to see him up and about and grateful for his coming. "There's no need to apologize," she assured him. "You are always welcome."

Ninianne nodded at the mention of Avalon seeming different, her own gaze drifting out to the forest that was now so vibrant with foliage and the distant sounds of wildlife. "Yes," she replied, "I'm not sure exactly what happened. But once the corruption began to clear more and more fae began to return as well. I thought they would all remain dormant or in their own realms ever since mortal belief began to fade but it seems they were awoken and drawn back somehow." The isle was not quite back to the glittering center of fairy dances and magic it had been when Ninianne first became a Lady of the Lake but it was more lively than it had been in many many years. Ever since mortals had turned to enlightenment and sciences to explain the world around them the fae had begun to fade and leave, choosing to stay in magical realms or rest deep under hollow hills. But something about the events here had stirred a deep magic and drawn them back.

Her full attention returned to Caspian when he cleared his throat asking if she had questions. Of course her mind was full of questions, ever since Caerwyn told her Caspian was not dead but had in fact been rescued after months as the Nightmare King's prisoner she could not stop her imagination from envisioning what Caspian might have endured and wondering how accurate those visions may be. She could see he was recovered enough to be here but she still worried about how he was faring, after all such an ordeal would surely leave more than physical pains or visible wounds. How his recovery had been going? If there was any way she could help? But she couldn't make him relive what he had gone through, if he felt talking about it would help he would when he was ready and with the people he felt comfortable with.

"How have you been doing?" She asked after a moment, just a hint of tentativeness in her voice. It seemed a silly question to ask someone who had been through so much. But she did want to know, to hear from him, how his recovery was progressing. Wanted to make sure, even if it would take time, that he was improving, at least closer to being happy and comfortable again.

Caspian felt himself relax as Ninianne smiled. She seemed to relax as well and her assurance also helped him. His brow furrowed slightly at her explanation. Corruption? He wasn’t quite sure what she meant- of course if the battle of his and the others resulted in the loss of what he had been told- then perhaps the Anti-Guardians had done what they know best.

As the realization settled upon him, a frown emerged upon his features. That must’ve been excruciating for Ninianne to witness. To have her home, tainted by dark magic. It wasn’t at all fair or deserved. No one deserved to have their home taken away from them.

But he had to remind himself that it was done and over. The island while still scarred was recovering… it was lively- more lively than it had been in a long time. He needed to focus on that. Exhaling slightly, Caspian nodded and smiled, “Perhaps, the magic wielded from all sides energized the dormant magic of the island. The magic has always still been here, just weakened or hidden away. Right?”

Ninianne seemed to struggle a bit on what to ask. He understood it- there was a lot TO ask. But he didn’t want her to feel pressured or worried about upsetting him. Finally, it seemed she decided on a question-and a relatively easy one at that.

"I'm well.... or well...I've been doing well." He said clarifying with a nervous laugh, "...Still getting used to things... not quite easy missing an eye." He said with a small smile. He shrugged his shoulder, "...Honestly though, it's kinda nice... being able to walk around again."

Something in Ninianne's words seemed to cause a hint of confusion for Caspian, the celestial's brow creasing slightly as she spoke. Quite a lot had happened both in the course of the battle and in it's aftermath that could have gone unnoticed in the heat of Caspian’s own battle and then of course during his imprisonment and recovery would not have been a priority to inform him. No doubt he would have many questions but not knowing how much those tending to him might have filled in already or how much he actually wished to know Ninianne thought it best to let him ask rather than overwhelm him with everything then and there.

Ninianne nodded at his offered explanation for the revitalization of Avalon. “I think you’re right. Avalon has magic at its very core so it would make sense that such magic would not truly disappear but rather withdraw deeper for a time.” And they both knew full well how chaotic that first battle had been, never mind a second one soon after. It would have been difficult indeed for anything to remain dormant amongst such turmoil.

Sympathy shone clearly in Ninianne’s gaze as she listened to Caspian’s response but she did give a genuine smile. She remembered the way she had felt while cut off from Avalon, both coping with the physical injuries of the battle as well as the emptiness and the memory of the dark twisted state Avalon was in the moments when she felt her bond with the isle ripped away. That was probably a mere fraction of what Caspian had endured. So it was no wonder that it would take some time to get used to things, especially something like losing sight in one eye. But the fact that he could speak so easily about it, even giving a smile of his own seemed a good sign. He had been through horrors but he intended to move on it seemed and was on his way to doing just that.

“In that case,” she replied as he mentioned being glad to be walking around again, “would you like to see more of the island? I suppose you have questions of your own as well.” She added. If it helped him to be moving about, taking in the fresh air and scenery Ninianne figured seeing the Avalon as it was meant to be, rather than in the heat of battle, might be enjoyable for him. Of course if he preferred to see the area alone she would comply but given his earlier reaction she guessed that he may have some things he might be curious about what happened and so she would try to answer any questions he had as best she could.

Caspian found himself nodding at Ninianne's explanation, while he recalled a lot of information about magic from his lessons during his time in the Cancer Constellation... back when he was... well that didn't matter now.

Either way, from his knowledge of magic- he found no reason to disbelieve her words, if anything it made sense and clicked effortlessly. He smiled at her offer, before he had never had a chance to really see Avalon, and he hadn't of course managed to do so during his last visit. Nodding his head Caspian glanced around at their surroundings,

"I'd love to see it honestly." He said genuinely, "...Never had a chance before- and with you here I am sure you would be able to show and tell me more than I could figure out or see on my own."

He hoped this wasn't going to put her through too much trouble, but a voice in the back of his mind reminded him that she would not have offered if she hadn't been willing to take him around in the first place. So relaxing, Caspian waited for Ninianne to perhaps form a plan of what she wanted to show and where to go, he would follow her lead.

When Caspian accepted her offer Ninianne gave a nod, glancing around as she considered what parts of the island he might most like to see. Honestly finding beautiful sights and a relaxing atmosphere could be found in almost any part of Avalon now that it was back in its natural state but there were a few special features.

"Some areas of the island tend to change depending on where in the world it happens to be," Ninianne explained. "But there are always a few landmarks that stay the same, and they are perhaps the most significant parts of Avalon." Depending on whether the enchanted isle appeared off the coast of a land out in the ocean or somewhere in a river or lake the forest and hills could stretch on for miles or could be more compact but somehow Ninianne always had some sense of where she was and how to find the unchanging features.

"One of them...actually is right here." She added, turning towards the edge of the forest where the silver and blue tree stood, the scent of its blossoms drifting past them on the breeze. "It was grown here after Avalon was restored. A memorial for what happened here." Ninianne's voice grew soft and almost hesitant. She was not sure how much Caspian would want to dwell on the battle and what happened after but she had offered to show him Avalon and it was standing just a few feet away from them. She glanced towards the Celestial, trying to gage his reaction to see if he would want to know more about the tree or prefer to move on to some of the less somber sights.

Caspian waited as Ninianne looked around, perhaps debating on where exactly to start. It wasn't before long she was speaking about the nature of the island. He nodded,

"I suppose that makes sense- Avalon has to blend in somehow... So it would adapt and I suppose environmentally is the best way...isn't it?" Caspian looked at Ninianne with a small smile, "Or...am I getting this completely wrong?"

He felt like he was on the right track, and most of his tone was a teasing fashion. He nodded as she continued about landmarks and at her gesture... he found himself staring at the tree once more. It looked quite lovely... the silver and blue shimmering as it swayed in the light breeze. The scent of the delicate blossoms were carried on the wind and it was so refreshing...

Still.... he felt himself grow slightly cold as she mentioned why it was there. Caspian tried to keep his expression as even as possible, but truth be told he was uncomfortable with it all. With those memories... what those moments led to and how stupid he had been.

"...It's a lovely memorial."
He said quietly with a short nod. "...Marcus would've liked it...I think." He said slowly.

Ninianne nodded with a smile at Caspian's words. "Even when magic was known to the world I suppose it still liked to keep a bit of surprise rather than flaunting it's presence." She agreed, glad to hear the lightness in Caspian's teasing tone.

And so she could not help but feel a bit guilty as it seemed the topic of the tree was one he was not eager to go into. His expression did not give much away, but Ninianne thought she saw a flicker of change in his demeanor as she revealed the origins of the tree. Still, she managed a small but grateful smile at his words. "I hope so," she replied softly as she watched the delicate leaves and blossoms sway in the breeze. It was nice to hear that he thought Marcus would like the tribute. A fitting memorial was the least she could do after what the Libra had done both for Avalon and Ninianne herself. Marcus had saved her life by sacrificing his own. It was something Ninianne could never truly repay but ensuring that he was remembered and that his actions had not been in vain seemed at least a step in the right direction.

However, she had no intention of making Caspian dwell on something he would rather not think about. So she gave a small nod towards a nearby path through the foliage. The path was small and unworn enough to still have a carpet of soft grass but still easy to follow. Fern leaves lined the edges along with the occasional lavender bush and other little clustered flower beds and led farther into the forest inland of the island at a gentle slope. "There's a small grove and spring up ahead that is always quite lovely." She said.

There was something nice about being here... talking with Ninianne... despite everything... despite how hard some of this was... it was nice to at least.... try.

He knew that his expression... was still hiding his true emotions, but he could not be sure of the success his attempt had. He knew it was a bitter subject for the both of them, and there was a large part of him that wondered if he would ever be able to move past what happened. But the important thing was he wasn’t there anymore. He had changed… he had learned… and they would continue to improve. That was the essence of it. And that was what Caspian had to hold onto.

It seemed that Ninianne wasn't exactly too keen on focusing on this either. She nodded towards a nearby path, that seemed to lead elsewhere. He nodded as he observed the small patches of colored flowers and gentle slope of the path, it seemed peaceful and her description was also enticing.

"Sounds good, I would be happy to see it." He said waiting for her to lead the way.

It seemed that Caspian took well to the idea of moving on from this place and so with a nod in the direction of the path she made her way over. Bare feet walking over the soft grass as her slightly trailing skirts stirred some of the nearby plants. She kept a slow and easy pace, allowing Caspian to walk beside her while still taking in the island. The island had completely shed the shadow of corruption that had been left by Nian Shi Lan's magic some time ago and was once again a place of peace and healing.

As they passed the forest grew somewhat thicker though the canopy still left a few open spots where golden beams of sunlight poured through. Birdsong filled the air, a few small birds flitted from the branches above or amongst the bushes and flowers. The soothing mixture of lavender and other sweet smelling herbs remained faint but noticeable as the pair passed by them.

"Many of the fae that have returned are still a bit shy," she spoke, having noticed the occasional rustle of leaves in the distance or a brief glimpse of tiny fairies or sprites peeking out from behind a flower petal here and there. Not quite afraid of the newcomer, they could see that he was clearly trusted by the Lady of the Lake after all, but still remaining at a distance from the pair. And truthfully, Ninianne could not blame them. Although some new inhabitants of Avalon came from the distant faerie realms many others were ones that had never left. Dryads who had remained in a deep sleep within their trees or imps burrowed down in the hollow hills of the island. As belief in magic faded Avalon had seemed to shift- a small current of magic flowing through it steadily but more subdued. The sort of magic that could only be noticed by those attuned to it. So even though the magic was now gaining strength and becoming more and more plain the fae were still a little wary after their long dormancy. And they of course had suffered terribly from the corruption. Pulled out of their long sleep by the feeling of the plants and land they had claimed as sanctuary was twisted and poisoned- and they poisoned along with it.

Soon enough though they arrived at the end of the path. A circle of all kinds of trees around a clearing where lush grass and wildflowers framed a pool of of crystal clear water seemed to sparkle in the sun. Ninianne knew it to be fed by a spring trickling in from a small cluster of smooth stones near the edge but it was gentle enough to create barely a ripple upon the surface, leaving it almost mirror smooth. "I've often thought of this as the heart of Avalon," she said, turning to better face Caspian as she stopped at the edge of the water. "The pool is the purest water I've ever seen- even by the rest of Avalon's standards and it always seems to appear somewhere close to the center no matter how large or small the island makes itself."

Caspian followed Ninianne as she led him deeper into the island. They kept a comfortable pace allowing him to walk side by side with her as well as being able to see the views Avalon had to offer- it was so very different from the evening island he remembered... but still quite beautiful.

The scent of wet earth, herbs, and flowers floated on a light breeze that stirred the trees around them causing the sunlight to flitter slightly as the leaves moved. Still within the movement of the leaves and branches, Caspian could’ve sworn that he saw the small faces of fairies and sprites. Small creatures he was pretty unfamiliar with- but surprised to see. Ninianne’s explanation came not too long after his observation, quickly supplying a reason- the fae had returned to Avalon. In all honesty, Caspian was not sure of what to make of that information. He knew fae were magical- but he didn’t really understand much about the whole Fae species and all that entailed... And his attempts to read up on it was often complicated by various books and stories that either said one thing, or another, or mixed up things, or other strange things.

So nodding, Caspian just gave a small smile, “I see… I guess that means good things for the island?” He asked unsure if he was on the right track- Ninianne certainly didn’t seem upset over the fact that fae were returning so he assumed it was a good thing.

Soon though they arrived at the end of the path, a large clearing filled with flowers and framed by a variety of trees. A pool of water glittered in the sunlight and it was truly a sight to behold. Caspian smiled as he saw the cerulean waters and heard the bubbling of the spring mixing with the various calls of the birds around them.

“Certainly seems like it…” He said with a smile, “It is beautiful.”

Caspian glanced over at Ninianne and then motioned to one of the smooth stones nearby, “Shall we sit down, rest here?” he asked.

There was a hint of a question in Caspian's response, reminding Ninianne that while she knew Avalon and what it had once been, knew what it could be others may not as instinctively know what the increasing inhabitants meant. She nodded in response. "Yes," she answered. "There will be some adjusting of course, it has been a long time since there were others here." And with that increasing population Ninianne knew there would be more responsibility. The fae here looked to her as their Lady, most were fairly independent and free spirited by nature and so could manage on their own but they still looked on Ninianne as a leader on the island. Which meant that she was responsible for them, and for their home. But those were cares that the prince of a celestial society would already know well and likely would hardly need to hear more of.

"But when I first came to Avalon it was teeming with life, spirits and fae both visitors and residents," she continued. "I doubt things will ever be exactly as they were in the past but this does seem to be a revitalization for Avalon after so many years of belief in magic fading and magical beings drawing away from the world."

Ninianne smiled, pleased that he seemed to be enjoying the sights. At Caspian's suggestion she moved to one of the rocks settling herself on the flat smooth surface. The fabric of her skirt still long enough to drape over her bare feet and still mostly cover the faint lines of zigzagging and twining across her foot and ankle. Just as they settled beside the pool Ninianne's gaze was drawn to movement in some of the foliage nearby. Tiny faces peered out from behind the smaller stones and between clusters of bushes and ivy strands. Some that peered out from the roots of trees or from where they climbed among trunks and branches were rather difficult to spot when they weren't moving. Looking almost like they were one with the bark. Wood sprites that lived alongside the nymphs tending to trees and plants. Still others looked more like miniature humans with the slight difference of glittering wings at their backs.

"It looks like some of the new inhabitants are rather curious," Ninianne smiled at the little creatures. One particularly bold little sprite had ventured away from the oak tree and climbed up the rock to come between Caspian and Ninianne. Up close the bark like face was a little easier to distinguish the features, somewhat resembling the face of a young boy. And, though age was a bit difficult to tell by sight alone among the fair folk the Ninianne noted the tiny leaves that poked out from his elbow and feet and thin twig-like limbs and so suspected this one was indeed rather young.
