The flash of light caused her to stumble. It was only a half-step, but it was enough to throw her off her target, gave him the time needed to avoid her blind strike and change back into something toothier, back to the snarling dog he’d started out as. Tch, that was hardly impressive to someone like her. Her beasts were more substantial and with her always. Also, canines were far less agile and all it took was a shift of her weight that had her pushing up and out of the path, balancing for a moment on the palm of one hand before arcing over to regain her feet, stance ready for a scuffle.

What she wasn’t expecting was the flailing punch from the infected man, catching her at the precise moment she found her ground, sudden enough that she had no time to deflect or dodge, only able to sway with the impact as knuckles connected with her jaw. It…stung. It wasn’t nearly enough to hurt her; even with a fearling coiled in his heart, the man was still just a human, but neither was it a pleasant tickle and the fire in her blood flared, sparking in her eyes and licking across her skin in places.

The swordmaiden’s words fell on deaf ears as Paigen pivoted, channeling the heat of her fire into her fists and aiming a swift uppercut for the center of the man’s torso. She was getting sick of this, real fast.

He had no idea what was going on….what was happening. On the one hand, the guy wasn’t wrong. He was the only defense against that lady. But on the other? He wasn’t sure he wanted to get between whatever feud they were having.

You’ll die, they’ll kill you.

And! Lastly! He had no idea what…they were talking about. Shadows….parasite? Were they insane? What was wrong with…these people, and with him? What was wrong with him? Were they saying he was sick? Was that why he was seeing things that weren’t there? Or were they fucking with him? Trying to confuse him?

Of course they are….they all are.

He was starting to get a bit more of a picture painted, though – about this wolf-man. Assuming the woman spoke the truth. Abuse of authority…maybe some sort of corrupt company owner who was exploiting some fracture in the system for his own benefit? Whatever the case was they seemed to at least put their tiff aside in favour of….whatever the hell a “fearling” was. Even more frustrating was that they were just talking around him. He was right damn here – he kind of wanted to know what the hell was going on! And with the new woman….

He didn’t know why he’d done it – running was safer, was better, but he moved, he attacked her. Attack her before she attacks you. It was just as he landed the hit that he heard the first woman’s voice once more. His knuckles burned from the strike – and the dark thing in his mind wanted more, wanted to make her bleed – but that voice…for some reason, her words froze him in place. He stared at her, eyes wide with terror, but he couldn’t….fight. For some reason…she had sucked all the fight out of him. But he was still afraid – and confused.

”I want you to tell me what the fuck’s going o--.”

That other woman, the one he’d struck, she was punching at him……with fire. God, what—

He moved, lurching, jolting out of the way, seemingly propelled by something out of his control. His eyes grew wide, frightful. But the darkness no longer clouded him – it was there, still, no longer within the man, but flitting about, just out of view, agitated, angry.
Defense vs AoE: 2v3 – fail
Defense vs Paigen: 4v4 – success, just barely
Action: N/A, thanks Nini face

The ability to speak is no shame. It is shameful only when actions do not follow words. To speak well is good. To act bravely is even better. The typical reactionary can neither speak nor act. He has somehow gained power, but has no idea what to do with it.
Joseph Meier
Sitting on bayonets is uncomfortable.
The lady with the disappearing sword really wasn't making any brownie points with him. He narrowed his eyes at her. Abuse his authority? Excuse the fuck out of him? "Oh yes, my favourite abuse of authority was helping bring unemployment to 1%." he sneered. Who the hell was this woman to judge him, or anyone else? He ground his teeth. He had enough nightmares from that era. His brain betrayed him by keeping him up at night, making him hear pounding on his door or the constant, rabbit-like shrieks of a woman being tortured. Fear had kept him alive. Fear and magic. If this woman had been so intent on trying to help them where was she when he was tripping over men eating dog and raping the elderly? The images in his head were enough to give a man a lifetime of fear. Just thinking that she'd been there made his stomach twist and his throat clench.

Or maybe now that he was here...she was here to end him. He was the last artifact of an era. Fearling...what the fuck did this man know of fear?

Not only that, when the fiery woman leapt down and attempted to attack him, his teeth clicked shut on empty air! They were both going to kill him, now that woman knew who and what he was. Thank whatever God was out there for the mortal punching this creature. He scrambled away from her, hackles raised and teeth bared, backing up toward the human. That man wasn't against him, and even if he was Joseph could tear his throat out. The others were harder to defend against.

Then the fiery bitch punched the mortal, and he saw the shadow leech out of him. So, regardless of that watery woman's words, she'd been right. A parasite, a Fearling. Whatever that meant. It was now out of the man. It looked like a pissed off wasp; twitching with rage. Well, now was the human's chance to run, because Joseph was still very much on the defensive.

He'd always been afraid of being 'found'. He'd watched what had happened to his brothers in arms over the years. Mere chauffeurs and servants of his government being dragged to some hideous corner of the earth to face a kangaroo court and torture. Many of them elderly and helpless. No. That wasn't happening to him. He wasn't going to die like some rat. He'd lived through several fucking wars and he'd not end it in an alleyway.

He truly thought that at least the woman with the sword was going to try and end him. He'd had soldiers before. He'd attacked people before (mostly as a panther or dog), but he'd never been one-on-one and he was proud of that track record. This time, he was clearly outnumbered. Well, if that cunt was going to swing a sword at him or the other light him on fire he was going to fight like the cornered animal he was. Joseph really wasn't thinking clearly, paranoia paralyzing his ability to think critically.

Why did people think they could excuse committing cruel atrocities against other people just because it benefitted certain others? Indeed his precious 1% unemployment would be something a good leader would strive for. And she might have applauded it, if not for the cost. It was easy for a government to be efficient have the power to enforce great changes when anyone who criticized them or somehow failed to fit in to their liking was removed from the picture. But a true leader, someone worthy of their position, knew that they were a servant to all the people of their domain. That they owed protection and justice to every one. Ninianne's gaze remained steady and clearly displeased with his response. "Yes, I expect many thousands of people being killed or imprisoned will do that," she replied sharply. She couldn't hold the comment back, the Guardian of Justice had little patience for those who thought they could hide wrong behind a few positive results. But she knew there were more pressing matters at hand right now. Making someone answer for crimes long since past was one thing but stopping harm from being done to an innocent too precedence.

And so her attention quickly shifted to the woman and the mortal man. Her influence seemed to have fallen on deaf ears at least in the woman's case as she moved to strike back at the man. "No," Ninianne gasped in alarm as she saw fire erupt around the woman's hand and swing towards the mortal but the archer's speed was impressive and she had committed to the strike even before the word had passed Ninianne's lips. Fortunately the man was quick as well, or at least quick enough, just narrowly missing the blow. Horrified as the Guardian was at the idea of nearly burning an innocent who was just under the power of a fearling creature she did have to admit that it accomplished one thing.

The darkness eeked out of the man, freeing him from it's control. Which left them back to where this had all began, with a shadow flickering just at the corner of the eye. Only this time there was a distinctive sense of fury about it. For the briefest moment she considered summoning Excalibur back

"That is the threat I spoke of, that is our enemy," she told the mortal, though his demand had been cut off by the archer's attack she had not missed his demand of an explanation. Unfortunately those few words were the most explanation she had time for. The fae doubted that the fearling would remain just angrily looming over them for long and she did not know how it might strike now that it was free of its host. Her mind worked quickly, like before she could not seem to look at it properly, as soon blue eyes flitted about to try to focus on it, the creature shifted away. She recalled how Excalibur had passed harmlessly by when she had slashed at it. And expending the energy to summon water up from within metal pipes or far below the cement would likely be a waste of time. If Excalibur itself, a sacred and powerful sword could not touch this creature then what chance did water have of harming it?

But something had wounded it and frightened it. Ninianne turned her attention to the other woman. Questionable tactics aside she was the only one among them who had proven capable of doing any sort of damage which meant she was their best hope. Ninianne may not be able to strike the creature herself, but there was one thing she could do to, hopefully, help be rid of it for good.

"The creature has fed upon fear and chaos here but you can put an end to it," she said, her influence once again supporting her words. But this time it was not to instill a cease fire but rather to fuel her flames. It would give her the added motivation, a righteous fury directed at the creature. If she used her flames or whatever weapon she deemed useful against the creature then she would have the added strength of one who fought for justice, for one who fought to protect the innocent. "You are the only one who has been able to strike it. Focus your attack on it, on the real enemy here."

She missed. How the actual hell could she miss, this close to her target? Admittedly, close quarters combat was not her preferred form of engagement, but it wasn’t as though she lacked skill in it. Perhaps it was the creature that inhabited him that lent this mortal speed, a carryover of the flitting, fleeting nature of the beast. That had to be it; there was no other reason she would miss a simple punch. Not this close.

Maybe it was the heat of the flames that danced across her knuckles, too close for comfort, but even without connecting, her strike didn’t go entirely to waste. If nothing else, it succeeded in drawing the fearling out, freeing the human man from its influence. That was good. In fact, this was better; now she didn’t have to risk harming the innocent. So long as this monstrosity was put down before it could attach itself to a new host.

Her beasts burned brighter in her eyes than they normally did, aiding her as she tracked the fearling’s agitated movements, never losing sight of it for more than a split second. The mongrel dog, the mortal man, and the swordmaiden all faded to the periphery of her focus, all but forgotten as the predators in her heart sang their hunting call, filling her with savage strength.

She could smell the rage rolling off the creature, could almost hear the curses it’s not-voice spewed, and she answered them both with teeth bared in equal parts snarl and feral grin. Anger made it stupid and stupid prey was dead prey. This battle was won; all that was left to do was make the kill.

It was some primal part of her that acknowledged the swordmaiden’s words, feeling them more than actually hearing, and the fire in her blood roared to a brilliancy that she hadn’t felt in more years than she could count. It was vibrant and warm and instinctually she laughed, the life her flames represented flooding through her and spilling into the night air. Oh, this was great.

In one swift motion, the Archer had her bow called to hand and the string drawn tight, an arrow of brilliant flame taking shape. In the next breath, she released, sending the bright streak of fire racing towards the enraged darkness, burning away lesser shadows as it flew.

He had no idea what was going on. Whatever this was….even though the sword-wielding woman and the other guy who was a fucking shape shifter or werewolf had their argument….they were both…both against this thing. Which meant it was some special kind of bad. And it had…what, been possessing him? When? How did that happen? How had it gotten inside him? He was disgusted, disturbed, even…afraid. But the guy….the wolf man….it was like he was utterly terrified. It was hard to tell with him looking like a dog but he was actually….physically shaking, standing in one spot. And the shadow….that dark shadow thing….

From the corner of his eye he could see it flitting toward the wolf-man. But he…he was just a damn normal human, he’d just gotten that thing out of him. He felt bad, but he didn’t want that thing anywhere near him. He was out for his damn self. He didn’t bother to answer the woman, nor did he take any forward action; he was as paralysed as the wolf-man was. Guiltily, he was glad that it was targeting the wolf-man now instead of himself.

That didn’t last for long, though.

There was another blast of fire, shot at whatever the….Fearling was. It wasn’t like the fire before – this was roaring flame, bursting shadows into smoke and ashes. And he could…this time he could hear the monster shrieking, and when it was gone….there was just….emptiness. A sudden empty nothingness that made him feel sick.

The man just fell to his knees, staring ahead at…nothing. For a while, he stayed that way, watching the flicker of flames.

”What the fuck is going on….”

This time the woman clearly did feel the touch of Ninianne's influence, most likely she was by nature more receptive to taking action for a just cause than holding her fire to assess the situation. Laughing she raised her bow and sent an arrow, alight with fire, streaking through the air to the shadow creature. The attack found its mark and a horrible shriek resounded along the street.

Awful as the sound was however, there was some solace in it as silence fell around them. It was gone, defeated by the light of the woman's fire. Which just left the rather odd assortment of people to try and mediate the damage done. And judging by the state the mortal man was in, the three immortals were going to have their work cut out for them. Ninianne's gaze softened to a sympathetic and concerned look as she turned to see the man on his knees clearly at a loss. With the monster both separated from him and defeated she could not be certain that he would see or hear her but...having been aware of magic already she suspected the belief would linger for at least a little while longer having now seen magic and all three of them with his own eyes. However, if his mind chose to reject that insight and retreat again to the likely more comfortable ignorance of magic then Ninianne would be able to contribute very little to helping him.

For now though she would assume she could be seen and heard still and just hope for the best. She knelt down in front of him, maintaining a comfortable distance. "I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's...all rather complicated, I'm afraid, but the creature has been destroyed. It won't be able to harm you." If he wanted to know more Ninianne intended to do her best to answer his questions but learning that magic and monsters were all very real and dangerous ones were lurking in the shadows might be a bit overwhelming for the poor man. So it seemed best to take things slowly and just focus on the major point for now.
