Anubis walks on the tropical island, squinting his eyes under the rays of the sun. He looked around, there was nothing to be seen yet, but the monsoon had blown through the area. It was a fierce one that had decimated the population of the small island. A sad sight to see, few people survived the cataclysm, but on a small island such as this one it may take the human government ages to send help. Death was natural just a stepping stone to the afterlife, it was as natural as the severe wind and waves that washed over the island, nothing to be feared, or lament over. Though these people were “free” souls meaning it was up in the air which afterlife they went too, but something was off. Ever since he came to this island he could feel it, as if the spirits still lingering were in disarray. There was a lingering presence here, not unlike that anticipation of a predator to its prey. He could feel the malevolent aura as well as the souls

Anubis entered the humid jungle, glad the canopy could finally block out some of the harsh rays of the sun. He made his way through the bush when he suddenly came upon the spirit of a young girl. She was balled in a bush crying. She looked as if she was still drenched, possible a drowning death from the ocean. He walked closer, “What happened?” He inquired.

“You can see me…t-there was a-a…big snake it devoured my momma…it ate her spirit.” The girl said before she started to sob again. Anubis’ mind thought up the evil he could be against. He wondered which monster or deity it could be, possibly an agent of Apophis or a demonic naga? He reached his hand out to the girl, lightly patting her head. He sent his energies through her giving her comfort and eternal rest. She faded going to the Duat where she may continue her journey in the afterlife. Anubis started to hurriedly search for the others, but they were scattered in the forested area. He rushed when he heard a scream and an unnatural hiss.

She could smell it in this place. A danger. She could smell the danger lingering on this small, ravaged island filled with death. Very rarely was it that Byakko took on such a large collection of souls under her charge at once, but the cataclysm had brought death to so many. Such was the nature of nature’s harsher events. She recognized this, and so recognized too that there were times her duty to the dead would be….difficult. After all, for the power possessed by the White Tiger, this many souls at once were….difficult to keep an eye on. They were rather like frightened cattle; it was hard to herd them to one place where they might remain under her charge - souls had a tendency to wander. And she as their keeper was forced to wander between them to ensure their safety.

And now, she could smell a predator.

She prowled, head low, body close to the ground as each sense sought out the beast which sought to harm her charges. She could feel its presence, but it was unlike any beast she knew. Ordinary beasts she could control; this one however was no mere animal. It was beyond their strength, something outside of her realm. Byakko moved on silent feet, eyes, ears and nose her most active senses. It was near, she could hear it; the hiss was serpentine, but it was no snake. She knew the tongues of all animals and this was none she recognized. A low growl emenated from her throat, and the celestial deity shifted; the dead were permitted to bear witness to the form of the White Tiger, and so she took on her far more powerful form, a hulking white beast, a true guardian of the dead. A roar tore from her throat and she charged in the direction of the sound, pausing only when she saw the form of another.

He did not smell human, though his appearance resembled one. Byakko let out another growl, her tail flicking from side to side in agitation as she stood to her full height, near as tall as a human to her shoulder in this form. She gave another sniff, and relaxed ever so slightly; this….was an ancient being, one who could not be caught by death. She could not perceive his death; he was beyond the reaches of such a concept. Byakko eyed him curiously. ”I lay claim to these souls as my charge. Where do you mean to take them?”

She did not have long to talk, but this information was vital.

Anubis hurried to the source of the dark enemy lurked on the island. The aura of this creature frightfully reminded him of the sun eater’ Apep. A slightest chill went down his spine as he thought about the worst Duat had to offer before, something that gave most who gazed upon the creature night terrors. Something else had came into view when he saw the beautiful pelt, he felt as if this being was a kindred spirit of short. The tiger smelled of death, but is wasn’t like that of a necromancer or the current monster, it was similar to his own. One who mingled with dead, but not disturbed them. He looked curiously at the tiger as it spoke to him. Not something he expected to see on the mortal plane, but was glad to see a possible ally.

“I wish to take them to the afterlife, Duat. A spirit I talked with said she had seen a monster devouring souls.” He said. Anubis’ pace hasted when he heard another vile hiss from the lush. “We’re close. Can you defend yourself?” He asked, prepared for an all out altercation, unsure how this possible ally would be able to handle a demon similar to those in the depths of his afterlife. He was not unaccustomed to facing these foes, they were fierce and never to be taken lightly. The more dangerous part was that this soul eating being was unknown, unlike the usual demons he dealt with. He would have to be careful and work fast. He entered the clearing to see the large snake woman leaping on a the soul of a deceased, devouring it from this plane. A visceral disgust filled him, as he saw the flame of a soul snuffed out by this vile creature. His eyes for a mere moment looked bestial, but he regained his composure, drawing his sword.

The being before her did not appear threatening, but power wafted from him all the same. Precisely what he was remained to be seen; powerful was all she could be certain of. But whether that made him an ally or adversary she was not sure. Danger lurked, but was that danger him? Or was it another? The presence was vast and suffocating; yet, despite that, Byakko was no aggressor unless it was necessary. She would discern the truth, first, before daring to make an enemy of the beast before her. As he spoke, it was with simple words. He, then, was not unlike herself, if his words were to be believed. Yet, she could see no reason for him to lie; further he had made no aggressive move himself of yet. She did not drop her guard, but she did bear his words in mind.

A monster devouring souls…

A guttural growl left her throat, though it was not directed towards him - rather to the unseen beast that dared take what was not for the taking. As if in response, she then heard it, the hissing sound of a beast which did not belong here. Fire boiled in her blood - a dangerous thing, for fire was the ultimate weakness of metal, driving her mad with rage. For now she kept her composure. But that this beast had consumed souls under her care….it was a transgression she would not take lightly. She turned her gaze on the man once more, flicking her tail and letting out a puff of air at his words. Could she defend herself. Of course, he could not know who she was - but regardless she took offense to the helplessness he presumed she had. ”Perhaps you are unaware,” she breathed, fixing him with a deep cerulean gaze, ”but the White Tiger is the fiercest general among his people. I am more than able.”

As tiger and man made their way into the clearing, beyond where that hissing sound came from, the White Tiger found herself facing what appeared to be truly a disgusting beast, a woman-headed serpent that, in that moment, had squeezed the energy from a soul, choking the flame until it died. Yet again, she found herself letting out a low growl, even as her compatriot drew his blade. Byakko’s teeth bared sharply as she looked upon the beast, eyes suddenly glowing a deeper and brighter shade of blue. ”Its right side. There is a weakness there. It sustained a previous injury; its right side is vulnerable.” She was speaking, of course, of what she could perceive with the Eyes of Death Perception. There was a jagged, red line running along its right side from the base of its head to about its midway point. There was where it needed to be struck.

No more words were spoken, then; Byakko let out a roar, charging into the fray. She was uncharacteristically aggressive now, but when souls were damaged in this way in her presence….she found herself filled with deep bloodlust, the Warrior within struggling to emerge.

The serpentine demon made Anubis ponder a dozen questions, but now wasn’t the time for an investigation he needed to act fast. He nodded at his companion’s advice, a weakness along the side, if they could incapacitate the feral woman then, Anubis could use his magic to put it down for good. The god ran with the speed of his sacred animal. His scimitar yearned for the flesh of the defiler of the dead, he craved bring his divine wrath upon the monster’s head. This reminded him of his times with Horus, when they were tasked with hunting down particularly rebellious or unholy monster in duat. Those were the days, the lesson inferred to him taught him never to underestimate a cornered lesser being.

His approach was met with resistance, her large tail swung in a sweeping motion. He was able to jump over it, faring better than the tree she had dented. He rolled on the ground back to his feet with renewed vigor. Running at her again will she was open. His hands guided his blade, its sharp blade tasting the sweet hide of the monster. As he gave her another lashing she let out a monstrous hiss of pain slithering away from her punishment.

Anubis glanced back at Byakko, with a nod, he had a plan. He lifted his hands as a sentence in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs glowed in the air, it roughly translated to Dead Man’s Respite. A circle with similar purple aura formed around instantly. Powerful beings could find a way in the protective circle, but this devil wasn’t smart or enough talented enough to break the force field. Nearby souls started to congregate in the magic area. “This will keep them safe only the dead and those I will can cross the circle’s boundary.” He called out not sure if she was there or chased after the soul eater. Now that the souls were secure he continued the chase, running after the hurt monster to bring it to task.

notes: CUT IT DOWN TO SIZE
i've got demons to fight
The Eyes of Death Perception gave Byakko a rather useful edge in combat - one that….very rarely saw the light. By nature, she was a creature of peace - she had no desire to fight. But, the Eyes of Death Perception allowed her to see things - the faults within all. Fatal flaws in the living, the dead, even in things that did not live. Flaws in character, flaws in design, anything which would lead to the destruction in some manner - whether physical death or some other manner of destruction - the breaking of spirit, the loss of will. It was rare for her to make proper use of the skill because - by nature - she had no intention of fighting. Peace was at her core; to engage in combat was to open the door to her other half, to the beast of war that lay dormant within. It was a monster she could not control, could barely tame. Peace was her choice.

But where the matters of souls being taken and harmed was concerned….her charges took special care - the desire for war bled into her heart. And into his, as well; she could see the desire to slay the beast in the swiftness with which her present ally moved. She followed suit, knife gripped tightly in her hand as she made to charge the beast from the other side, hissing lowly.

The beast moved quickly, aiming to strike both down. Byakko evaded the lashing tail no less swiftly than her companion and ally. She had landed on all fours, teeth bared as the blood began to burn within her, War seeking to come out. She let out a roar, jumping back to her feet and diving toward the snake-woman, aiming not for her flaws, but rather to expose them. She made to lunge at her face, forcing her back, forcing her to rear up and expose the tender flesh that was weak, that could kill her. She did not need to be the one who tasted the serpent’s flesh - her ally was more than ready to take that honour and she saw no reason to stop him.

The serpent roared on contact. The lines of death grew, making the area of effect greater. They could kill it with greater ease now that a weak point had been used to their advantage. Cerulean eyes turned to meet those of the other - he had given a nod, a sign that there was something on his mind, a plan. She found herself halting and….watching, curiously, as glyphs appeared in the air around them, a circle of light appearing beneath it. This was some form of magic, she could smell it, but none that she was familiar with. She sniffed the air, but there was...no indication that it was anything she had encountered before. She turned, though, at the smell of new presences, the souls gathering. She nodded as it was explained - a barrier for the dead. This was how one protected them, then.

”Good.”

It was the only word she uttered before charging after the serpent. She could smell her blood, fresh from the wound. The metallic scent called to her own element, tracking the beast would not be hard. She held her knife in hand, making now for her tail, diving downward at the beast. If she could keep the tail from lashing out, then they would more easily be able to defeat her.

The vulnerable souls were protected, and the White Tiger had made the enemy open for the coup d’grace. He had a decent mastery over his magic, but he was trained as a defender along with Horus. Where there was a chance for a spell to go wrong and not put an enemy down for good, the blade has much lower. He loved the feel of raking across the hide of a fiend, sending them to the afterlife. He wasn’t sure whose afterlife this serpentine foe would go, he hoped he could claim the soul of this one. Anubis would make a case to call upon articles of torture. Duat was not ran as the Greek Underworld, those found unworthy were devoured, but if Anubis thought someone was especially heinous and lacked divine protection he would call for their sheut to be more than just impressed under his sovereignty. With wicked beings that fell to his domain, he would induce torture on the last remnant of their existence. With their hearts eaten and body decayed all they had were names and sheuts. Names faded over time, but with sheuts Anubis controlled that, he could take the earthly debt out of their shadow indifferently.

The monster let out a bestial roar before finally crumbling upon itself. He looked at the white tiger for her efforts, they were much appreciated, he gave her a nod in respect. Between the two wounds inflicted the monster could not survive their combined might. Anubis could finally breath easy. He approached the White Tiger. “Is there an afterlife you guide your herd to?” He said motioning to the souls in his protective shield. They needed to pass, she would have some to take to her afterlife if she so chose too.
