Children were children, no matter what part of the world they lived in. Magical or mundane, they were very much alike in their Belief, their wonder, and, most importantly, their innocence. For this reason, the Guardians of Childhood all had their way of traveling over the world constantly, covering long distances to appear wherever they were needed. Even in the most obscure places, where magic still had a strong hold in the world, Guardians occasionally had important work to do.
Virginia was doing such important work in Santoff Claussen today.

A bunch of children, some younger and some older, wandered around in the park, bundled up against the cold and bored to the point where they started discussing secret knowledge. Such situations tended to make alarms go off in Virginia's mind, and the graceful bird arrived just in time to overhear some of the older children trying to prove to some of the younger ones (with no definitive proof, thank goodness) where babies really come from. Luckily, Virginia was prepared for such occasions. Turning in a graceful arc in the air, she summoned up the illusion of a wiggling bundle, with a baby's head poking out, held carefully in her beak. She flew low, to give a good line of sight to the children, in case they had any doubt which theory was correct.

Storks. Clearly.

Today, Katala was only here for a quick visit. He needed to return some of the books he'd borrowed from the Santoff Claussen library and pick some new ones up as well. The people of the town had been very kind about sharing their books and even allowing them to take them home to the Grove, so long as they were returned of course. He tried to make sure he returned the books the way they wanted him to, within two weeks, but sometimes time got away from him. Unfortunately, this was one of those times.

He was only a few days late this time and, as usual, the librarian was very forgiving about it. They knew the exact reason he kept them so long so they usually only gave him a warning not to do it again. He inevitably would but he did at least try to do as they asked.

With a new bundle of books under his arm, Katala was ready to return home. Almost at least. He did like to say hello to the children of Santoff Claussen, especially when he knew it would be a few days before he returned to the town. He found them bundled up in the park, staring at something. It wasn't until he came to a stop behind the group that he finally realized what it was.

"Is that bird stealing a baby?" He asked aloud. This may have been another one of those human things he didn't understand, but based on the shocked and angry comments now coming from the children, he was going to guess that wasn't the case.

Like every time she made her appearance in the form she was most known for, Virginia's entrance with the bundle in her beak got an excited reaction from the children who immediately started measuring it up to their previous knowledge of the origin of babies. This time, however, as she flew lower for a better view, another voice joined in:

>>"Is that bird stealing a baby?"

Virginia turned her head to throw a glare at the... person. Not a kid, from the looks of it, but a peculiar-looking adult. That was accusing her, of all things, of... stealing a child! The kids picked up on the new explanation, and some of them seemed to agree with it. Virginia ruffled her feathers and circled them again, landing on a windowsill, and seemingly placing the bundle inside. She was not sure if the inhabitants of that particular apartment were expecting a real one, but for now, she just needed to dissolve the suspicions of being a kidnapper.

Taking wing again, she flew over the children and the adult person, and landed a little bit away among the bushes, to watch for the results of her appearance.

Katala watched the bird circle, mouth open in complete confusion. What?

"Did it- It stole a baby and put it in someone elses house?" He looked down at the children as though they might have an answer. "Where did it put it? Do they know there's a baby in their house now? You humans are fragile, did it just drop it on the floor in there?" That question got a few shocked gasps from the children. They were all in an uproar now. Some of the older children saw an issue with this and tried to remind everyone that Katala was not technically an adult and didn't know everything but were completely sidetracked when one kid went into a long explanation about how babies died instantly if they were dropped. Which, from his understanding, wasn't exactly wrong.

Everything was in chaos and a few of the children had run off to try and look in the window where the bird had left the baby, to see if it was alright. If the whole situation hadn't been so bizarre, Katala actually might have been able to reign in the children. All things considering though, he was just completely dumbfounded. He really didn't know what to make of this.

Virginia landed, watching the kids' reactions. If anything, they seemed more agitated now, and the ridiculous claims of the strange-looking adult were making them even more agitated. The stork scoffed (as much as she could, with a beak in the way), and ruffled her feathers. Some people were just not getting it.

>>"Did it- It stole a baby and put it in someone elses house? Where did it put it? Do they know there's a baby in their house now? You humans are fragile, did it just drop it on the floor in there?"

"Excuse me, I did no such thing" Stork snapped, taking a hopping flight to land next to the strange-looking person. They were clearly not... human. Mortal? Were they another Guardian or immortal she did not know about? Stork did dislike it when colleagues interfered with her work. "I would appreciate it if you would not upset the children. I merely delivered a child to where it belonged. It's my job."

Katala turned and watched a bird come hopping out of the brush. It was the stork! And apparently it could speak. Which wasn't the strange part about this situation in his opinion. This was Santoff Claussen after all. A dozen strange things happened every day, usually before noon.

"Your job?" He glanced back to the apartment the baby had disappeared into, the one that now had a group of kids jumping and trying to see inside it. "It's your job to return babies? Why? Did someone take it? How do you know that's where it goes? Do the people who live there know it's there? Did you just drop it in there? Do they know there's a baby in their house now?" He was so confused by all of this. Why was there a bird caring for a human baby? It was a large bird and clearly magical but he wasn't sure if it was the wisest thing in the world. Unless there was something going on that he wasn't aware of? That was a definite possibility. Still, this was all very strange. He just stared down at the bird hoping it- she?- would give him some answers.
