Jonathan was having a damn good time in China.

It was a country that somehow, always appealed to him. The chinese knew how to get drunk, they made the best drunk food, and they loved to party. It helped Jonathan to forget everything. Forget Volker's troubles, forget his own. Right now he was completely out of his skull and he needed every moment of it.

Jonathan was currently lounging in something the world had probably forgotten about...an opium den. A series of pads on the floor, low couches, red lamps, and thick smoke. It took a lot more than a normal little piece of tarry drug to get him senseless, but senseless he currently was. He was laying on his back on a low couch, chewing thoughtfully on a long pipe, with his eyes on the smoke swirling around on the ceiling.

He lifted a hand, drunken and limp-wristed, and began to shift the smoke. Creating a pair of large spidery wings, a tail with a little feathered fringe, a large snake-like head and delicate limbs tucked under a large breastbone. He shifted the smoke again and the little dragon cocked back her head and opened her mouth, spewing a little gout of ashy cinders.

He missed her. His hand flopped back to his chest and the dragon dissipated. He missed her.

After a few hours Jon's allotted time ran out. Gone were the days of laying on an opium couch in a haze for half a day; now the wardens had their thumbs on the timer and would forcibly drag out those who weren't able to pay to stay longer. Jon didn't exactly have to be dragged, but he did stumble out with less coordination than he would have liked. He leaned against the wall of the building for a moment. It was raining. Steam was rising off of his skin.

Collecting himself, he began heading down the street and found a street vendor selling noodles. He settled in at the stall, paid for a bowl, and ate quietly under the man's awning watching the rain go by. He missed everyone. He wished Volker and Sab all the best from afar...the crazy pair really needed to just settle down to a life of small-town butchery somewhere. He missed Kary, but that went without saying. That wound in his soul wasn't about to close up.

The thunder growled through the clouds beneath her, the only indication that, wherever she was in the world, it was raining.

This high up, all Karyorrhexis had to worry about was the sun and the moon... And, occasionally, an airplane. She had nearly been discovered on the way here, in fact, because she had been distracted. After Vincens' lackadaisical revelation that Jon was alive (!!!), she had wasted very little time getting herself to the Carnival to see him for herself. She had, however, been greeted only by a characteristically grumpy Volker who, though visibly surprised to see her, had "better things to do than police the depressed demon" and closed the door on her after a colorful remark regarding the pile of lovers Jon was likely to be found under. Despite this, her distraction was hardly because of what state she might find him in; instead, it was because, for the first time in nearly a year, there was genuine hope he would be found.

Thus far, she had passed over the eastern United States, Europe, and a fair portion of Asia in a serpentine fashion, keeping her mind constantly open and probing. She had needed to stop three times thus far to help those on the ground, but she had made short work of the encounters, unwilling to give Jon the opportunity to slip past her... If he was over here.

Purposefully, she had avoided returning to her cave. She likely always would, considering the heartache that had occurred there. Perhaps, with Jon's support, she would one day reconsider.

She grew tired, at which point she had landed only long enough to replenish herself off the earth's resources. She considered this cheating, but, again, she was unwilling to take the necessary time to actually rest and eat. Her stomach now twisted on itself because of this, and there was a crink in her neck that was unlikely to resolve any time soon, but she was so close. She knew it. And so she would not stop.

Wherever she was now, it was packed regardless of the weather. She was being bombarded with signals, much of it becoming white noise as she dug deeper, not wanting to miss him. Because this was precisely the sort of place Jon would put himself if he was upset - somewhere teeming with so much noisy life that he could drown himself in it. Though, of course, she had no illusions that was all he was drowning in.

Snorting, she continued to swim through the minds of the thousands of humans on the ground, doing so with the efficiency of someone who had been performing for the last seventy-two hours.. give or take. A handful of those she sampled were heavily fogged, like someone under the influence of more than just a small amount of alcohol. She had been coming across several of these on this continent, and just like all the others, she paid special attention to this one. When Karyorrhexis disappeared, Jon tended to flock to groups like this.

It was tiresome sorting through consciousnesses that were so... dulled, but it-.......

Karyorrhexis paused entirely, not even flapping her wings. It may have paid off.

Eyes going wide, she gave a powerful stroke to pull her back to a proper altitude and let out a roar that was nearly drowned out by the thunder. Nearly. Her heart raced in her chest, and she began to circle. Her muscles vibrated with the desire to land, change form, and run to the holder of the mind she had just touched. But it was... possible... that this was merely someone similiar to the man she sought; so she waited. If it was him, he would reach out to her.

Jonathan felt a strange peace in places like this. Places where humanity surged around him; it was so crowded even at night. He slurped noodles quietly, watching the streams of humanity and neon flow by him. Little drifts of music and shouting drifting through the rain and water ruining his broth.

He finished his bowl, set the chopsticks on top, and made to reach across the top of the cart to give them back to the vendor. For street food it hadn't been half bad. When the man reached for the bowl, something touched Jonathan's mind. He instinctively jerked against it and dropped the bowl, making the noodle seller struggle to catch it before it hit the ground. Jon blinked at the vendor's withering look.

"Sorry." he mumbled. It had to be her. It was her. His first instinct was to reach out to her, feeling her in the sky somewhere above him. He brushed his mind against hers...then withdrew. He was in so much pain and guilt from losing their children. He had dreams about it. Horrific nightmares where he was trapped in an egg shell getting colder, and colder, and colder. Seeing eggs in marketplaces made him sick to his stomach.

She'd found him but to what end? He was somewhat protected here. She couldn't land and change anywhere in Beijing. It was a city that was crowded even for rats and cockroaches...but if he knew her she wasn't going to leave.

'Kary.' he reached out to her again. He knew his connection with her was strained and rotten. It was so full of pain, and exhaustion. He hadn't had good sleep in weeks because of the nightmares, and his high tolerance for narcotics made a bottle of sleeping pills affect him like sugar tablets. He was tired, and hurting. 'I didn't think Volker liked you enough to blab.'

She nearly did a flip in the sky at the sound of his voice in her head, and it was only her sense of self-preservation that kept her aflight. Suddenly, the exhaustion collided with her, and she wished more than anything to find a bed to curl up in with the last man on this planet who meant anything to her. Just to hold him, solidify in her mind that he was indeed tangible. She groaned deep in her chest.

Where can I land? she asked desperately, sinking just low enough in the sky to poke her head through the clouds and get a good look. The answer was.... nowhere on the ground. There was a tall building to her left that nearly met the clouds, though, which she may be able to safely get to... If she Changed before actually touching down. It might be painful, but at this point, just about anything was worth the risk.

She sent a snapshot of the building she set her sights on to Jon, then drifted over to it. Karyorrhexis circled it a few times before gathering the gall to do what she needed to in order to land - Change at the last possible second, so she exited the clouds as a human and dropped the remaining fifty or so feet without her wings. One thing her rider had taught her while instructing her how to fight in this form was to curl and roll when anticipating a hard impact, so she did that even though it went against her instincts as a dragon. Thanks to her scales - which stuck with her until she willed them to take on the appearance of more natural clothing - the blow completely knocked the wind out of her, but little else. Still, she lay on her back, rain pelting her now-bare face as she stared up at the deeply gray condensation above her.

The skyscraper was quite a distance from Jon, so he wouldn't be here any time soon. But.. she could cut that time down if she met him half way.

Bouncing to her feet (which was more than just a little bit of a feat, considering her exhaustion) Karyorrhexis raced to the door atop the roof and tore it open without any regard to the cost of replacing it. If it came to it, Jon would pay it for her (but they would most likely be too tied up in each other to even know anyone was looking for the culprit). She jumped down the first few flights of stairs, using the railing to balance her, accomplishing all this on pure adrenaline. When she started to slow down, she told herself it was acceptable because Jon still needed time to reach the building. But... the faster she got to the bottom, the faster she would see him.

Nearly tripping three times the rest of the way, she finally made it to the ground floor and burst from the door... To discover she had come out on the alley side of the building. Jon, she called out wearily, slumping against the building. Adrenaline could only take her so far, and she was running out; but her heart was still pounding in her chest, knowing that at any second he would appear.

Of course she figured out a place to land. Hadn't she figured out the reason he'd gone to the ends of the earth in one of the most flight-unfriendly cities on the planet was that he didn't want a giant lizard landing anywhere near him? Obviously not, and he didn't respond when she showed him the picture of the building.

He didn't know what to do. He was a shadow of the man he'd once been. Instead of having a healthy dad-bod from too much rich food and coffee, he'd dropped nearly seventy pounds. Too much inhaling, not enough eating. He only really ate when food started to crawl into his nightmares and the gnawing in his gut was too much to ignore. The bowl of noodle was probably the first time he'd had anything but alcohol and drugs down his throat in weeks.

His eyes were hollow, and he had frighteningly big rings around them from poor health and not enough sleep. How could he? Every time he closed his eyes he had nightmares about their children. How could she be so happy? He was the man who'd killed them. He stood there blankly for a moment, blinking rain out of his eyes. He supposed he had to admit it sometime. If Volker had told Kary where he was, she must have a good reason for it.

Jon did miss her. He missed her terribly. He just didn't know if he could face her.

More than anything, he wished the high he had wasn't already starting to wear off. He began to make his way toward the skyscraper. It wasn't far, he could walk there. When he did find the front entrance to the building, he didn't see her outside. Maybe she'd gotten lost. He wandered around the building, ducking into an alleyway, the loading zone behind the building, and up the next alley. That was when he saw her.

She looked tired. At least as tired as he was if not more. He stayed his distance. He wasn't really sure why she was here...and...well, there were a lot of tall surfaces for her to fling him off of. Maybe he deserved it. He walked forward but kept a few yards between them. "Didn't think you'd be able to land here." he said to her quietly. "You should really put on a raincoat or something."

She had been so excited to finally find him that she did not realize there may be some other reason for Jon not responding to her mental image than a mutual understanding that they could meet there. But they cared so deeply for each other that there was no other possible interpretation.... She thought.

The dragon had briefly closed her eyes as she waited for his response, and so when he first entered the alleyway she did not immediately recognize it as him. He felt different, like a worn-down version of his old self, and when he finally spoke and her eyes flicked open, she understood why. "Jon," she whispered on an inhale, gaze lingering on his gaunt appearance.

She had always imagined that when they reunited she would run into his arms, and he would kiss her until she forgot everything else that had gone wrong in her life. But now he was here... Or, rather, there, considering he was several strides away, looking uncomfortable and not altogether welcoming. Her brow creased and her nostrils flared as the meaning behind his words sunk in.

"You..," do not want me here, she finished silently, keeping it within her own mind. Suddenly, her gaze was on him for an entirely different reason, and her lips parted a hair as her excitement morphed and withered into a new, fresh wave of despair. "That is why I could not find you," she hissed from between clenched teeth - not because she was angry, but because of the extreme pain she was in, "You kept moving." Away from her. "W-why?" she asked, looking up at him from where she sat, crouched on the pavement. She did not recall sliding down the wall, but her exhaustion had apparently gotten the best of her at some point.

It did not seem so important anymore to tell him that Volker had not, in fact, told her where he was; she had finally just refused to go about her life until she found him. And now that felt like one of her most foolish mistakes.

Jon really did want to run to her and kiss her. He just didn't think she'd want such a thing. He'd come here to try and atone for what he'd done, and he really was confused as to how she wasn't currently painting the bricks with his brain matter. He took a deep breath when she pointed out that was why she hadn't been able to find him. Of course she hadn't been able to find him. He hadn't wanted to be found.

A horrid thought struck him. Had she been to the cave? Had she seen what he'd done? He swallowed thickly and closed the distance between them. "Kary. Have you been to the cave?" he asked her quietly. "Did you...did you see?" He couldn't help thinking the thoughts he was, whether Kary picked them up or not. He'd felt them wither and die away inside the eggs no matter how warm he kept them or how much he begged them. How many times he'd reached out to her begging, screaming that something was wrong. How he'd eventually just sat there and stared at the dead rocks they'd become, crying and begging for some little sign of life.

"I failed you. I failed them." Jon said softly. "I couldn't live with it. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry our children are dead because of me." He sat down the wall across the alley from her, refusing to look at her. "I'm sorry I left them there but...they were too big to bury."

Jon couldn't help it. He started to cry. Deep, long, painful sobs. If she was here to kill him he'd submit to it. He deserved every bit of it.

"....Yes," she admitted warily, unsure of whether he meant before or after she smashed the eggs that were supposed to contain their children... but did not. "I could not leave them like-.." She cut off as he began apologizing, and her absolute worst fear seemed to come to life. When she had found the lifeless eggs without any sign of Jon, she had immediately assumed she had failed him and the eggs were infertile.... But a very, very small part of her felt pain at the possibility that Jon had left them to die. That he had gone back on his euphoria of being a parent, on his word to her that he would keep them warm, and ran away. She had dismissed the thought just as soon as it had entered her mind, but now....

Her mouth opened to ask the impossible question, but something he said brought pause. He... thought to bury them? A man who deserted his children would not wish to give them that last right.

They had died in front of him. Because of her inability to produce viable offspring. And he thought it was his fault.

"Jon, no..," she whispered, so quietly he might not have heard. Despite her weary state, she got to a stand and made her way across the alley to settle, gingerly, into his lap. He hardly looked like he could support her, but she knew he could. Besides, she could kneel on either side of him if need be.

She wanted to reassure him, to cup his face and kiss him tenderly so he had no doubts about her feelings toward him. But finally having him reachable had her doing something different - she hunched forward, forehead at first resting against his, then moving to bury in the crook of his neck. "I lost everything that day," she wept, unsure when the tears started flowing. Her hands fisted his shirt roughly. "I lost him... And them... And you." Her words were barely recognizable beyond her sobbing, her whole body shaking. She was so beyond herself it was a wonder she was able to maintain this form.

"I... I destroyed them," she confessed, pulling back slightly but unable to lift her chin for fear of retribution. "I could not leave them there..."

Jonathan couldn't stop the sobbing once he'd started. It was like lancing a boil; all the pain was coming out in front of her. He thought he killed them, he really did. It was he who had done something wrong and he'd had to watch them die. He'd planned so much around them. He'd read them stories, told them about their new family that was waiting for them in Louisiana, mused over which schools they'd go to, told them about their mother.

When she crawled into his lap he put his arms around her and held her tightly. She didn't blame him at least, but he blamed himself. He tucked his head against hers and cried with her, running his fingers through her hair. "I couldn't stay...I couldn't stay there with them. They were dead and staring at me and I didn't know what to do. I couldn't feel them anymore...I couldn't bury them. There was no one to...to do anything. I tried calling for help...I set the whole field on top of us ablaze...no one came." he gasped between sobs.

God, he remembered it so well. The entire place had been a flaming torch, black smoke drifting across the sea in a horrifying cloud. His last, desperate signal fire. He could understand why she'd destroyed them. "Someone would have...only found them and....and done something to them." he said quietly. "I'm glad you did." He had a sudden horrible image of a newspaper article detailing giant eggs found and dissected for some sort of horrific study. He shuddered and squeezed her tightly.

"I'm so sorry they died because of me." he whispered quietly, resting his forehead on her chest. "It's my fault, it's all my fault."

She did not know if Jon had not heard her, or if he was too caught up in his own sorrow to hear hers. Regardless, they were both hurting, and sobbing together in an alleyway somewhere in Asia was not the best way for them to heal.

After nuzzling his neck - far too gaunt, she noted - Karyrorrhexis pulled back and placed her hands on either side of his face, as she had wanted to do from the start. She kissed him - just a gentle brushing of lips - and looked him in too-sunken eyes. The salt of their combined tears in her mouth, she pressed her forehead to his again and let her lids fall. For an amount of time she did not measure, they remained that way, rocking.

"Can we go somewhere?" she asked, hopeful that their time apart did not skew his understanding of her. She wanted somewhere private, where they could hold each other and let out their sorrows... and be clean. Somewhere out of the rain, where food - and cushioned surfaces - were readily available. It was becoming clear she would not be able to talk him out of his self-imposed guilt, but she could break the cycle. Kissing him - slightly harder this time - she whispered, "I love you, no matter what."

They had not said the words enough before, she thought; but then her affection had been torn between Jon and her rider, and the bond with her rider was not one to be overcome. It was wholly depressing that his death was what was necessary for Jon to become the center of her universe, but there he was, even if he was worse for wear. "Come on," she beckoned, slowly extricating herself from him so she could stand and offer him a hand up. "You know how I hate water," she tried lightly, though it would be obvious to both of them that the humor was strained at best.

Jonathan kissed her back gently, letting her nuzzle him. He sighed softly when she put her forehead against his and closed his eyes, dropping his arms to her waist and cuddling her close. It felt so good to have her near again, and knowing she didn't hate him for it made him feel at least a little bit better. He kissed her again, harder. "I love you too." he told her, putting his hand on her cheek. He meant it more than anything.

He did agree they needed to stop cuddling in an alleyway. "I've been staying in a place. It's not...well it's not the Ritz but it will do. Volker sends me money when I need it. And condescending letters." he smirked and kissed her, taking her hand and pulling himself up.

Jon put his arm around her waist and tucked her close. He warmed them both, heating them up so water began to steam off of them and sizzle when it hit their skin. It took a lot more effort than usual to heat them up, but he did so as they walked down the road to the little apartment he'd rented. It wasn't much; a single bedroom with a cluttered bed, clothes on the floor, Volker's letters on a low dresser and a toilet with a shower in the adjacent room.

He cleared his throat, suddenly embarassed by the squalor. He got a trash bag and began cleaning up, simply tossing things in the trash. Especially the cocaine spread out on a mirror, the pipes, and other drug paraphernelia.

"Sorry." he apologized to her, wishing he had time to do things like vacuum. He didn't bother bundling the sheets up...he just tossed them in the trash and pulled fresh sheets (that looked like they'd never been used) out of the closet. He made the bed in record time and went to her, kissing her. "I...haven't bathed in a while. I'm going to take a shower. You can make yourself comfortable. My phone's on the table. The password is uh...you. KARY. Order us some nice food." he told her, kissing her and heading into the bathroom.

He washed, thoroughly, and shaved. His clothes were ruined, he didn't bother with them, and the old towels likewise were stuffed into a trash bag. He came out wrapped in a new towel, clean and shaven, and came to kiss the side of her neck. "I missed you so much..." he muttered against her skin, running a hand down her stomach. "Maybe I should lick something before the food, hm?" he smirked.

Having Jon here to hold... Karyorrhexis could not get enough of it, even if running her hands over him had her feeling a lot more bone than before. So badly she wished they were somewhere wild, where she could use the earth's energy to replenish him; but now that she had found him, she had little intention of leaving his side, so she could see to filling him out in a more natural way.

"We could sneak into something else," she suggested with a waggle of eyebrows - a look she had learned from him. She appreciated the warmth he offered, but knew from their revitalized connection that he was expending a lot of energy to do so. She would have scolded him, but she selfishly enjoyed the comfort he provided, and it seemed the room he was taking them to was not far from their current location. If he had been here long enough to rent a room, why had she not found him before this?

The answer sent a fresh wave of guilt over her. Because she had not been looking.

When they entered the building, Karyorrhexis knew to expect very little. It did not give off a "homey" feel, and she found herself pining after Jon's room at the carnival, where the windows stretched to the ceiling and let in a sort of sensual afternoon light. Not to mention his cozy bed, which she nearly forgot the feel of. The room here was... a far cry from all of that. A hole in the wall, as some may say. A total wreck, if you asked her. But it was a room where she and Jon could be alone, and as she tiredly watched, he zipped around the place and cleaned up as best she could. She appreciated him.

A soft smile tilted her lips as he handed her his phone, which Karyorrhexis waited until he was in the shower to flip in her hand. He had showed her how to use one of these, but it had been over a year since she had her hands on one, and honestly... she was far too tired to figure it all out again now. Eyelids growing heavy, she sunk onto the bed and sprawled out, phone flopping onto the mattress next to her hand. She drifted off until she felt a warmth at her back - and because it had been so long since he had been there, she tensed.

Coming to, Karyorrhexis relaxed. She peeked at him from the corner of her eye and smirked, a warmth building in her belly that was entirely of her own creation. She had forgotten what this felt like. "I do not remember how to use this," she admitted, flipping the phone over her shoulder at him. "I do not care what we eat. Do you mind if I just-," she cut off to yawn, "-nap until it gets here, though?" She reached up to push her fingers through his still-wet hair. "And then you can lick whatever you want," she teased tiredly.

Jonathan curled up next to her and lazily took his phone, kissing her shoulder and pulling her close to him. "Go on, take a nap." he told her, kissing her neck and leaning his head into her fingers. He laid his head on her side and typed in a number on his phone, ordering food. He had to admit, he kind of missed the Carnival. His own bed, fresh coffee, Volker's room service.

Jon dozed himself for a little while, until his doorbell rang and he went to get the boxes of food. He let Kary sleep, tucking her steamed vegetables, fried rice, and almond chicken away for her to eat when she woke up. He was working on three egg rolls, a small mountain of rice, and broccoli beef. He eyed his phone and saw Volker's name buzz across the screen. He sighed, swallowed, and answered it. "Hi mom." he said lightly.

He talked for a while with Volker, telling him about Kary and that he was safe. The chef simply grunted at him, reiterated that he needed to come home, and hung up. Jon shrugged and set his food aside, leaning over Kary and dangling an egg roll in front of her face. "Food's here." he told her, grinning and kissing her ear. He kissed her awake, cuddling up behind her.

She hummed at the contact, already half asleep by the time Jon took the phone from her. She thought she would have been wide awake once she found him, but putting herself through the ringer to achieve such a thing apparently negated anything else. The pillow beneath her head smelled a little strange, and it was not as cozy as Jon's back home, but it sufficed just fine. She was with him, and he was safe; sleep came easily.

The doorbell rang, but she did not stir. Jon's phone rang, and still she slept. Perhaps her subconscious understood she was not in danger in this place. The smell of something warm and oily woke her though, and the second sensation - that of Jon's warmth behind her - soothed her further. She could still sleep for hours more, but her cat nap rejuvenated her enough to playfully nip at the roll the dangled before her, only to be thwarted by his kiss. Smiling against his lips, Karyorrhexis rolled partially to her back to kiss him more deeply.

"Thank you," she breathed, taking the roll from him and biting into it. Without her rider or Jon around, she had consumed very little human food recently; she forgot how satisfying something greasy like this could be. Once finished, she sat up and sniffed out the remainder of her food, taking a moment to turn and kiss Jon one more time before forcing herself out of bed.

Peeking into the bag, she licked her lips. He had ordered her a full portion, which she made short work of, and afterwards she slumped back in her chair, satisfied. Sighing contentedly, she reached backward, aiming for Jon's hand. "Did you eat all of yours?" she asked, looking at him upside-down. You need it, she finished silently.

Jonathan watched her eat happily, polishing off the rest of his food in a less ravenous fashion. He took his time, content to watch her and cuddle next to her while they ate. It was quiet, but Jon had a lot to think about. He was afraid if he brought it up again, the happy little spell that involved feeding a hot girl chinese food naked in bed was going to shatter.

He saw her reach for him and took her hand, rubbing his thumb over her palm. "Yeah, I ate all mine." he kissed her hand. Well, the implication was a bit obvious; he needed it. He had lost a lot of weight on a drug and alcohol binge. He came around in front of her and kissed her. "Mm. You taste like chicken." he joked, smirking and deepening the kiss.

He did want to make love to her. He had missed her, and it was normal to want to have her in his arms again. He wanted her with him. He understood she needed to go help people, and it wasn't always possible for them to be together every week or even every month. It was her weird burden and he'd accepted it. But he wanted her to have a home. Not just meet him wherever she happened to be flying. He wanted her to move in with him. To come home. Live as a permanent resident in the Carnival. Yeah, it wasn't a palace and it did come with some strange roommates.

Jon picked her up out of the chair and kissed her deeply. "Mm. Someone promised me dessert." he joked, carrying her over to the bed rather awkwardly. To be completely honest, she probably weighed more than he at this point, and it was hideously hard to carry her with his body completely out of shape.
