REST FOR THE WICKED
It had been a long while since Sabellius had headed back south, but... he supposed it was now time. He had been gone for... well, he couldn't tell, he hadn't really been keeping track. There was a mass of fear and hatred out there that he needed to find... but it was still eluding him for now, teasing him with just a taste of its power before it would disappear, like steam rising from a roof. He gave a great moan of exhaustion... travelling in this forest, he could pick up only the most basic of emotions--mostly it was the fear of prey animals he could feel out here... it was enough to keep him moving, but not enough to make him clear-headed by any means. It was... cruel in a way that he had to be among civilizations in order to slake his thirst for complex emotions when he was much better suited to a wild, untamed place like this.

Still, even now, he could pick up on... something. Something more than frightened rabbits and deer. It was faint, but, perhaps if he tried to track it, he would eventually gain enough strength to actually go at a proper pace in his shadow-like mode. He felt it pulsing out there, and he staggered along like he was following a bird's cry, tripping over the forest landscape and having to pull himself up. He didn't mind the minor wounds--the scrapes and scratches that flecked black blood onto his tattoos--they would still heal, faster yet if he could have a decent meal.

He eventually could smell still water, and sooner rather than later, he found himself looking out on a pond, a peaceful little glade in the midst of the trees. He stumbled out to the water's edge and tried to merely sit--he didn't need to drink the water, but perhaps it would do something to refresh him.

Unfortunately for the wraith, Sabellius was still a bit too floppy for his own good, and he tripped forward, straight into the pond. Green algae and water flew up into the air as the wraith dropped down into the water--though it wasn't deep. He could probably just float on the top of the pond for a moment and just turn off his respiratory system so he didn't have to deal with drowning or anything like that. He supposed that perhaps that wisp of negativity might escape him too... but perhaps al he needed for now was to rest. As far as he could tell, there was no one to discover him here, and even if they did, perhaps they would be shocked at what looked like a corpse bobbing up and down in a pond.

What caused her to stop, she might not ever know. There was no particular distress call, no tugging plea for help that forced her from the sky. Truthfully, the... unsettled spirit she sought did not seem at all inclined to want her aid, or even recognize that perhaps what it was getting itself into was dangerous.

Had she reached her mind ahead of her body, felt the being at the other end, she may have understood that she was not needed. Such a stretch was potentially hazardous, however, and so she rarely implemented it. Thus, she landed at the pond's edge carefully, prepared to yank the body from the water even though her skin crawled with the thought of touching the liquid. It took her a few moments thereafter to fully grasp the situation, and then not only understood what she was looking at, but who. Her mind's eye played a scene she had forcibly confined to the depths of her subconscious:

She and Jon had just... Finished a shower... When suddenly Karyorrhexis felt the irrevocable call to aid. Jon had tried to warn her, dissuade her away from going into the room below his, but he did not understand how a dragon functioned. She was physically incapable of ignoring a cry for help, and this time it landed her in Volker's and Sabellius's room, where they were torturing a man for pleasure. Unable to fathom why a person would do this to another, she healed the man and ensured his safe exit from the Carnival, she herself narrowly escaping Volker's rage.

She had little memory of Volker's partner at that time, him having been a rather silent party in that distressing encounter, but the markings of his skin were memorable nonetheless. Granted, she had seen the front of him then, but the back that now bobbed in the water appeared awfully similar. But... Had he not died almost a year ago? How was it that his body was so well-preserved?

Immediately she shook her head, knowing the thought was misplaced. There had never been evidence of his demise; only assumptions. And the body before her now still contained its soul - meaning he was, in fact, not at all deceased.

Sabellius? she prodded, ever so gently, and nudged him with the back of a talon.

REST FOR THE WICKED
Hmmm... honestly, now that it had been a while and no mortals had passed by. Sabellius was just slightly to start regretting his decision to fall into the pond--though it really hadn't been a decision at all. He just had… no energy left to struggle his way out of the pond. This would be a rather a pathetic end to a creature who had torn apart villages and gods alike. What was to be done though? He would just have to hope that there was some kind of negativity that would worm its way into him so he could be on his way.

But there didn’t seem to be anything for a great while. In fact, he was only moderately aware that something as large as a dragon had landed beside the pond and had begun investigate him until he felt… discomfort? It was a weak kind of fear but, it did nurse him back into consciousness just enough to be a bit more awake. Another burst pushed him further into awareness as there was someone behind him—a large creature. He supposed if attempted to eat him, it would soon discover that consuming a wraith that did not want to be eaten was not a good idea.

Even so, there was something about the scent of the creature—it was… sweet, comforting even. A familiar warm scent that was just out of the reach of the wraith… where did he know this smell from? He was able to turn his head so that his face was at a profile, his eye stretching to look behind him at the mass of lean muscle and scales behind him. A… dragon? It had been so long since he had seen one… or, as far as he could remember. His memory was sluggish and fractured at the moment.

His eye became a bit wider as it said his name to him—perhaps he had met this creature? If she knew his name, and he knew her scent… it must have been so. He tried lifting his limbs, something in order to twist himself in the water, but he was helpless as he felt the gentle poke of the dragon’s talon. He coughed a bit, spitting out water that had begun to reside in his lungs, and he spoke out in a quiet voice, ”Help?”

Perhaps this was not the being she thought it was. Their encounter had been brief, but she would not forget energy in those moments. Now he was.... subdued, maybe even only a fraction of what could be considered "alive". But she sensed no injuries on him, only... A void-like nothingness when she tried to assess him further. She had not done this previously, though, so she could not comment on how he usually.... felt.

He moved! Her head snaked so he could see her better, and she tilted it to the side in curiosity. Are you... injured? she asked, partially answered a moment later with his plea for help. Perplexed, she edged closer to the water (terrifying!), and reached out with a clawed foot to gently lift him from the treacherous liquid. Setting him gently on his side on solid ground, Karyorrhexis pulled back, resisting the urge to shake the water free from her foot. She would survive.

It was instinct to heal him, but with the way he seemed to house an abyss within his being, she did not trust pouring any of her power into him. It felt as though that would be akin to dumping it into a bottomless pit, which helped no one. Therefore, she settled on probing his illness in other ways. Mainly, just by asking. What ails you?

Seeing him like this made her mind connect a wide variety of dots it had no business pairing. Like feeling Alistair's draining life force, until there was nothingness. Like the pain of finding her children long dead, with Jon nowhere to be found. Then that took her down the trail of: where was he now? Was he alive? If so, why had they not crossed paths since? (Even though she was well aware this last bit was likely her fault.)

REST FOR THE WICKED

The wraith stared up at the dragon as the dragon stared at him, his blacken eyes wide and unblinking. Yes, this feeling, so familiar, yet escaping him for now… there was a precarious, peculiar balance in this creature that poked him with her talon—so much nasty positivity in her… but there was discomfort, uncertainty… it was meager food for the wraith, but he’d take what he could. He finally blinked, slowly. She was unnerved by the water. All the better, though the fear was brief as he was dragged out of the scummy pond and plopped on his side. He coughed more, the water being ejected from his lungs. He laid on his side like a fish, his mouth open and gasping a bit… it was interesting, this feeling of being drowned. He hadn’t experienced it too much before, but he probably preferred the intimacy of Volker cutting off his windpipe with his teeth.

He lifted his head ever so slightly to her words. Ailed? Yes, he supposed he did appear rather sickly. The anxieties that whipped up in her only made Sabellius stronger—there was quite a bit in there. Little things, bigger things, deep sorrow…. Interesting little things tied to death. Again, sadness was not his favorite dish but beggars couldn’t be choosers. ”Hungry.” He managed to finally mumble out, looking up to Karyorrhexis with a blank stare. He sat up now, placing his hands between splayed legs and letting his head fall forward, looking ridiculously child-like as he bent over and coughed up a bit more water. How much was in there, he wondered? Perhaps he should just try to turn into water himself and then just absorb it… but then again, it would disrupt the conversation. Sabellius’ mind turned. He knew this dragon, and that most likely meant he should not try to eat it… but then again, he was starved in the core of his being. He moaned a bit. These kinds of dilemmas were hard.

He looked up at Karyorrhexis—wait… he did know her name. ”Karyorrhexis.” He said, though there was no particular emotion behind it, not realization, happiness, disgust. He lifted his head, ”I know your scent. You’re the….” He paused. Had he forgotten already? ”Who are you?” He asked, his fingers unconsciously flexing in the grass and mashing up the mud underneath the pads of his fingers. ”Why are you thinking so much?”

The being was an interesting one, that was for certain. His motions were dulled, as if smudged by a painter's thumb. Yet as she studied him, he appeared to gain a modicum of livelihood. Her head tipped to the side at this peculiar display.

For some reason, his admission cause Karyorrhexis a pang of anxiety. Hungry... for what? she asked, not at all excited to hear the answer. If she remembered correctly, Volker had once spoken - albeit briefly - about his mate's tastes. She did not recall them now, likely because whatever it was had been so vile she did not wish to commit it to memory. It would probably be best for mankind, then, if she were to fly away now and leave him to die... But he was a friend of Jon's, and even if she currently did not have contact with her lover, his feelings were still important to her. Which was foolish, considering how variant those feelings were.

Her gaze sharpened on the wraith when he spoke her name. Yes, she replied easily, though his next question gave her another pang. I-... was Jonathan's... girlfriend. She stumbled through the sentence because she had never understood the terminology, when she was in fact not a girl and they were quite definitely more than friends. Also, saying it in past tense brought up a fresh wave of sadness for Sabellius to feed upon (little did she know).

I have a great deal to ponder, she answered, voice fading out at the end. There had not been many to speak to about her strife, so now she was uncertain to whom she should divulge it. I lost everything I loved in that war, she finally admitted, looking away from him in an attempt to hide one sliver of the hurt she felt. But... if anyone knew where Jon was, it should be his friend, correct? Head swinging back to the wraith, she asked, with perhaps too much hope in her tone, Do you know where he is?

REST FOR THE WICKED

As the dragon looked at him, he looked back at the dragon with his blackened eyes--he normally wasn't good at expressing under the best of circumstances, but under this kind of lethargic drunkenness, he could hardly explain himself or really understand her words. He was making her uncomfortable, or something she was thinking about was at least making her anxious, and that was slowly sharpening his senses again. Maybe in a moment, he could stand. He pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes, rubbing them like a sleepy child and blinked as he stared up at the great creature. This was Karyorrhexis.... Jonathan's mate. He had suspected that Jonathan had tried to keep him away from his mate to prevent him from trying to eat her, but he was not a beast without faculty. He would only attempt to eat her if she was particularly mean to him or if Jon said it was okay.

"You are no longer a bonded pair." He said, more to clarify it for himself than to ask for clarification from Karyorrhexis, it seemed. He ran his fingers over his face a bit more, as if trying to massage some energy back into it and merely took a deep breath as the sweet sadness washed over him. Nostalgia and reminiscence brought up strong emotions, and in this particular case, it seemed that the emotions were fairly recent. "It is for the best. As far as I know, Jonathan has not tried to be a father for his children before, despite mating with many people." The wraith, unfortunately, could not seem to say this with any sense of sympathy, and thus it sounded much more like a matter of fact statement from the shadowy being.

He folded his hands for a moment, but then placed them in front of him, pushing himself up to be on his hands and knees before he tried to get up to standing--he wobbled for a moment but eventually could look up at the dragon again and listen to her words more carefully. A lot to think about? If it was just about Jonathan and their dissolution of their bond, that would be terribly boring. But the dragon did say something more interesting, "A war?" He asked, now that sounded interesting indeed. Sabellius had been in many a war and thought they were quite fun, "Which war?" There were currently many wars, some of which Sabellius wanted to be a part of. He wondered if he should asked how many people died in that war, but she asked a question first.

The wraith blinked for a bit but eventually rolled his neck a bit, "He could be in New Orleans, but he tends to travel more when he's in despair. Out of all of his mates and breeding partners, I do think he stayed with you quite long in comparison." Sabellius thought a bit more, "But I have been traveling as well. I should think he wouldn't leave the Carnival with just Volker to protect it." Volker was, for better or worse, infected with Oor and who knew what the god might have gotten up to while he was gone, "Are you searching for him?"

We were never bonded, she corrected, the memory of Jon's upset at the fact fresh in her mind. I was only ever bound to my rider. That, especially, Jon had been incapable of understanding, and she had been unable to fully explain. The bond between a dragon and its rider was not something to be trifled with, nor replicated. Even if she had bonded with Jon (which she did not believe entirely possible), she knew without a doubt that it would not have been the same. They came together romantically, but she and her rider had been... two halves of a whole, indicating how empty the other would be if ever one were to disappear. Her despair now was living proof of this.

He was prepared to father our children, she immediately defended, tone sharper than it probably needed to be. She could not fault the wraith for the way he thought, though; she had been under the same assumption until she had taken him to see the eggs. She had hidden them from him for weeks because of her anxiety over his rejection, yet when the time had come he showed the exact opposite. It was in that moment, when he grasped at the eggs larger than himself and she could feel the love pouring from him that she knew she had found the right man.

Which war? Were they not all just pieces of the over-reaching capital-W War? The... Anti-Guardians against... everyone, she finally managed, confusion and pain marring her words. It was the reason she had become a Guardian, though not exactly of her own making. She enjoyed the renewed sense of purpose, but if she could give it up in order to have her rider back, she would do so in a heartbeat.

The... Carnival? That was not helpful. That was the first place I looked. It was.. in disrepair, and no one was in or around the building. She had checked. Extensively. I.. have admittedly not been searching as hard as I could be as of late. I searched for many weeks, and I could not anymore. Because she had been overtaken with grief, and it had taken her last shred of energy to search even as long as she had. Truthfully, I believed him.. deceased, she finally admitted, looking away a moment. Are you certain he is not?

REST FOR THE WICKED

Sabellius' face seemed to flinch, or perhaps his brow merely wrinkled for a moment at the idea that she would have not bonded with Jon... not because it upset him or anything like that--he wouldn't understand anyone who would want to bond with Jon, however, the idea that one would want to bear children--children that would need rearing--with someone you were not bonded to, that was a bit confusing for the wraith. How would she or even Jon, for that matter, decide who were to raise the children if they weren't a pair?

With most creatures, it was left to the mother alone to rear her young, but Jonathan was a sentimental type... any spawn that he brought forth and saw he would likely want to connect with and help raise, and it did sound like the dragon had been assured that he wanted to be a father. Though he supposed it did not really matter when their children had all perished. "Perhaps it was your inability to bond that caused your mating to fail." He posited. After all, his and Volker's union to create Albrecht had not been easy at all, and had required magic and sacrifice in order to make it work. But their bond was the common thread that had lead them to having their son.

The wraith blinked slowly at her, wondering if him asking about the war had been... strange somehow. There were quite a lot of wars, human wars, fae wars. They were all great fun. But this one in particular seemed... quite intriguing. Something known as Anti-Guardians... were they against people guarding things? That seemed odd, and it seemed odd as well that Karyorrhexis would feel pain because of such a thing. Perhaps these Anti-Guardians were more interesting than they sounded. He would have to learn more, "I have not known about such a war. What is everyone warring against these Anti-Guardians about? If they dislike guarding, I may come across them one day." He still, after all, was supposed to guard the carnival, along with Volker. He supposed he hadn't been doing such a good job as of late...

And what the dragoness said seemed to confirm such a thing. He sat up a bit straighter, curious as to why the Carnival would be abandoned, "Volker would not leave." He asserted, though... he supposed that Volker would know how to mask his presence if he did not wish to speak to Karyorrhexis. He tilted his head at the idea of Jonathan being dead, "I have not seen Jonathan for quite some time, a few weeks, I think... perhaps a handful of months..." The wraith honestly didn't have the best grasp of time, "It is possible he's dead. But I would also think that if he was, his brother would be very upset and he would have gone to avenge him if he could. Or at least dock my pay for not guarding him well enough..." He cocked his head, "Do you think the Anti-Guardians made Volker stop guarding him?" If the war was so widespread, that seemed as plausible reason as any...

His confusion was apparent, but she did not delve into his subconsciousness to determine over what.

His... sudden suggestion felt like a kick to the gut, if such a motion were able to harm her in this form. She had not considered this possibility, and his voicing it caused a fresh wave of despair and anger to roll through her. Perhaps that had been the case... But would she ever have wanted children so much that her rider would be displaced for it? No, she did not think so. He had been far more important to her than procreation. But-... Was that wrong of her? Was...

I believe it was due to the difference in our genetics, she interjected, distracting herself from her own destructive thoughts. A dragon is not meant to mate with a demon. The words were matter-of-fact and not intended as a jab at Jon, though it certainly could come across that way.

Sabellius's complete lack of knowledge of the War surprised her enough to put her woes over her love life on hold for a moment. You... do not know of the war? she asked incredulously, wondering where he had been all this time. They... Emotionally degrade future generations by plaguing the minds of today's children, she tried to explain, even though that was far from the whole truth. I am explaining them poorly, she apologized.

What? N-...no. That is not how they work, I do not think. If she were able to smirk, she would have. Something else he said caught her ear, though... You think Jon to still be alive? she asked, hopeful. Do you know where he might have gone? I was uncertain where else to look after the Carnival.. The surrounding areas had been devoid of him, too - even the bars. He did like to travel when upset, though... He could have gone anywhere. Will you help me find him?
