I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light hath left me broken-hearted.
Tobias looked at the morning sun as it rose over the sleepy little village. He liked coming up north, always had a penchant for the frost and cold. It reminded him of the frost mountain tops of home. Though the village lacked the boisterous winds, instead he was greeted with the quiet snow fall from the sky, adding to the already blanketed village. He put on his coat and his purple scarf, he sipped the last bit of the hot chocolate in his cup before pouring the rest of the pot into his thermos. He knows it was bad for him, but he did rather enjoy having some hot cocoa between his training sessions.

Tobias headed from his lodging starting down the path for the day. While he preferred to always be on the road, there were times he had to stop and train. He still hadn’t completely masters his winter flame, so it was important to go over the basics and push himself. He recalled a frozen lake that wasn’t too far from town. It was secluded enough for him to practice without freaking out the locals too much. If they did stumble on his training he would just glide away, might as well think they had a full breakdown. A small grin graced his face. He should perish the thought but small pranks like that were fun.

Tobias walked to the water’s edge, the lake was fractured, no wonder it was currently vacant. The ice was too thin; any weight added would bust through down to the frigid water beneath. It would be a nice warm to make an ideal training ground. The pale blue fire ignited on his fingertips, and he a bolt to the fractured ice. Immediately the water started to solidify. He tested the sturdiness and walked on the ice. A small laugh escaped as he hurled another in the center freezing the water. The flames danced on the water before stealing the heat from the water, leaving nothing but ice behind. He walked over to another portion and to his surprise he stepped on a weak spot, his having his lower half sink into the water. Crap he said under his breath in Italian. He float out of the water and started to shake his leg.

Ice Breaker
Home. He was back home! Well, not really but it was getting close. Even though he had left the North voluntarily to search for his 'destined person' for lack of better wording, Rudolph found that he often needed to return to the cooler countries often. As a reindeer he was meant to live in cold climates and spending too much time away from them had nasty aftereffects as he'd discovered. Turned out that he actually fainted when it was too hot. Nasty, nasty thing that he didn't want to deal with right now.

Down below the snow that had recently fallen made the ground look like it was covered in white blankets! This view during flight was always something that the reindeer looked forward to, even if he usually flew in his animal form despite his glowing red nose. Sometimes it was embarrassing but this? This made it all worth it. Especially the faces of the children who would come out to play.

His eyes settled on an ice lake nearby that had frozen over. It was really very pretty... until he realized that there was someone who had fallen in. Although he might not know the bite of ice-cold water (mainly because he wouldn't feel it anyway) Rudolph knew that most creatures weren't fond of the temperatures. Mortals and Immortals alike.

Without a second thought he began a rapid decent. Unfortunately he'd misjudged and ended up crashing in a nearby snowbank, changing to his human form in the process. Although the latter was more to make sure that any humans wouldn't be shocked by a talking reindeer. He wasted no time in recovering as his head popped back out of the snow and he jogged over to where... the person was now shaking of the water. So he hadn't made it in time after all.

"Hey are you alright?! I saw you in the lake and wasn't sure what to do. It looks like you're freezing..."

Tobias rose out of the water, shiver like a cat tossed into a bath tub. He looked to see something streak through the sky and hit a snowbank. The frozen snow puffed up in a snowy cloud before settling. He was pretty sure it was some type of animal, he had seen brown fur. He walked over to the impact when he heard a noise from the crash site. He was surprised to see a young man walk out of the snow pile. “I’m fine it was you who I was worried about.”

He pulled off his scarf and started to ring it out watching the cold water fall into the snow. He gave a smile to the person. “Well I have a stronger constitution than a human. I loved in cold climates all my life taking a dip in the sink is nothing I can’t handle. Though I should get near something warm.” Living in the Alps and Scandinavia has its perks.

He looked him over a moment and decided to be direct. “I am more worried about you, you had brown fur and you were flying a moment a go. Do you have any broken bones or bruises?” That was quite a wallop of an impact.

Ice Breaker
The man was worries about him? It was a kind gesture, but as a Reindeer he didn't feel the cold. Especially when compared to many human beings considering they had such a low tolerance for such temperatures. If he really wanted to Rudolph could very easily walk shirtless out into the middle of a snowstorm, even if he'd feel it a little bit more compared to his form as a reindeer. One thing he had learned on his travels was not to assume that every person or creature he met had the same strengths or weaknesses. Everyone was unique!

"Oh! Well thanks for the thought but I'm fine. Really! It's nothing to worry about. I don't feel the cold anyway. Not unless I'm in a really bad shape anyway." He watched as the man twisted his scarf and the water trickles out. That was certainly something Rudolph would have to remember since it wasn't uncommon for his own clothes to be sopping wet for one reason or another. "I'm glad you're alright!"

"I'm sure we can light a fire or something like that. I mean you can - I know the theory but in practice I'd rather not. My kind aren't always fond of fire for different reasons. Gosh I'm just rambling now aren't I?" The Reindeer shifted his weight from one foot to the other in an attempt to keep moving. It certainly wasn't the cold, more that he needed to do something or risk blurting out all kinds of different unnecessary things. That was something he'd rather not do any more of.

"Y-you saw that huh? Eheheheh." A bright red tinge began to cover the tip of his nose and trailed down his cheeks. Not from the cold, but from a small pang of embarrassment. "No need to worry. I just need to work on my landings. It happens a lot so I'm fine. Promise!"

He really was rambling about things today.

Tobias looked at the young man, he wouldn't be surprised if he crossed paths with the likes of a snow spirit. He had run into those before both on the mountain tops of the alps and in the fjords of Lapland. They were either the friendly variety the would help lost travelers out of snow storms and fridge mountain passes, or they would be the more sinister variety that loved to deceive the unwary into freezing to death. Tobias had handled both, but this one in particular seems to be the friendly one, thankfully.

"You're alright, my fire is special we can't really use it for warmth." He said having one of the flames dance on his fingertip. The ice colored flames started to freeze the water on his finger. He put the spark of cold fire and flicked his finger to rid himself of the frozen remnants. "A fire that eats heat has a few good uses, but warming up is sadly not one of them." He could use the flames to light the way, walk on water, and cool off anything he needed, but not being able to make a campfire when you could manipulate fire was just a sad part of irony to him.

A smirk came to his face, nodding at the blushing acquaintance. "So I will wager a guess, you are a reindeer, maybe even one of the Jolly old guy's up North?" That was one place he would have loved to travel to, the North Pole. He knew of course that was off the table, almost an impossibility, but it wasn't going to stop him from dreaming. "My name is Tobias by the way, I'm a vampire…but not a blood sucking one. People always assume that one first." To be honest it was almost insulting to be mistaken for those brutish thugs, but they got a book deal with Bram Stoker, his race didn't.

Ice Breaker
A fire that couldn't be used for warmth? Wasn't that a contradiction considering that fire was almost defined for warmth? No that was the wrong word... designed maybe. That sounded a bit better. Still a fire that was ice blue and didn't have any kind of heat to it was intriguing to the Reindeer. It was something that he'd never encountered before which immediately spiked his curiosity. What he wouldn't give to be able to do something like that and figure out how it worked. Maybe it might help him sometime in the future as well!

"That's... that's really cool!" His eyes were obviously shining with both admiration and curiosity, even someone who couldn't read faces very well would be able to tell. "If you don't mind that joke of course. Actually even then! I've never seen anything like it. Do you know how it works? Is there some kind of trick to it or is it something that requires a connection to the cold? If that's the case you don't really look like to type to have that kind of connection if you don't mind me saying." Rudolph's words simply tumbled out of his mouth and he couldn't stop them, moving from one to the other in quick succession. Sometimes his words ran away without him before his brain had time to catch up, or he just started speaking without thinking.

Now it seemed that his secret was out of the bag. Not that he ever tried to hide it in the first place. Many children had seen him since leaving the Pole and he wasn't ashamed to say so. They were the reason that he still remained in existence after all and he always would as long as children kept believing. Although it was really very embarrassing when he heard them singing a song about the one day he pulled the sleigh. Honestly he wasn't even sure how that story had spread like that.

"I-it was that obvious?" Scratching the back of his head Rudolph gave a sheepish grin before a decisive nod. There was no point in lying if someone had figured it out. "Then again I don't hide it well. It's kinda a habit of mine, those crash landings." A Vampire who didn't suck blood? That was awesome! Not that he really knew what a vampire was as the reindeer hadn't encountered too many of them during his travels. "You don't look like the kind of person who sucks blood so I don't really understand why people assume that! My name's Rudolph and as for my species... well if you want to get specific I'm a Magical Reindeer. There's a different since normal reindeer are stuck in deer form and can't talk with humans."

Okay, his ego was getting inflated a bit. He did know his magic was unique and very impressive, but he did get a sense of satisfaction when others made comments about it. He had the flame glow in his hand, and idly passed it to and from his hands. "I have an inkling, I learned from my late wife. She learned from Skadi, the Norse goddess of winter. My wife was the one with a connection to the cold, but I was a good student." He looked at the flame dance, a connection to the cold would have been nice, and he was still learning to be honest. His wife was at least immune to burning herself Tobias, however was not. He was more cautious with his use. His violet eyes looked at the flame as it danced; momentarily the thought of Jetta danced on his psyche. He snapped out it, turning his attention back to his new acquaintance.

"It is a little hard to get a hand of. You have to be able to channel magic, be good with ice magic, and then be able to manifest it to move wildly like fire. Be calm and focused like ice on a still lake, but spontaneous and free like a wild fire. It is hard mindset to get into. Took me forever to even make a spark." He remembered all the frustration when through trying to make the smallest ember. The first time he did, he let it come in contact water and found out the hard way freezing fire does not pair well with water. It is akin to flames on gasoline. The flame maybe like ice, but it was still hard to tame.

He gave a nod; he knew a reindeer when he saw one. Norway and Lapland did not have a shortage of them. A flying one was new. "Thought I had gotten hypothermia or a concussion when I saw it." Even magical occurrence could throw him of this game. A reindeer going from the sky into a snowbank was one of them. "I can't even fly full yet…I fall up then fall down. I totally get the crash landing." His brethren could take to the skies easily, but he could more or less levitate and glide. Good for short distances, but long travel was more hulk style jumping without the cool 'boom' when landing. "I am an Anima Vampire, anima means soul. We eat emotions not blood. We also can have garlic and holy water. So there is that. We have many differences like not being undead. We call the bloodsuckers, Sanguine Vampires." There was a bit of rivalry between the vampire races he would admit, but only because his was better and could actually look into a mirror.

…NO WAY, not that Rudolph, he thought to himself. Tobias had to be honest; he knew that Santa was really, he heard Ole Saint Nick was gruff Russian with stellar tattoos. He knew the same man had some reindeer, and he had heard of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, but honestly putting it all together was a bit of a challenge for the vampire, at the moment. There were a million and one questions floating in his head. "You have a song named after you and a light bulb nose." Tobias didn't meant to have the moment of verbal incontinence, but there it was. He rephrased it fast. "I mean you are famous for your………." He ruined everything. "I got nothing, you are the magical reindeer."
